98 was not a great vintage and why Giacosa bottled the SS as a red label has long been a bit of a mystery. There’s a lot in this wine to like, and no reason to leave it sitting in the cellar. Fully mature, ample bricking, softer but still lively fruit, rich mouthfeel with classic sous bois, a bit of iron, red berry and herbal overlay, and soft maybe a bit overripe tannin. Lovely, but not near Giacosa’s most memorable SSRs. — a month ago
Last mag of this fabulous Spatburgunder. Purchased at the estate. Improved a lot since my last note. — 2 months ago
96 really is quite a vintage. Double decanted yesterday, showed well at first. But with the extra time it was just stunning. — 2 days ago

Many 85s from Piedmont have faded. This one is just a classic example of fully mature Nebbiolo. Tar, leather, sous bois, soft fruit, iron, wet stone, and tannins still alive, well balanced. Long finish. Showing surprisingly well. A great wine for a heat wave!! 😆 — a month ago
Brovia is always a pleasure, especially the Rocche, but in 07 it falls a bit short. Just a bit. — a month ago

Opened the 97 Monprivato back in spring and it wasn’t showing that well. This one seems fresher, more balanced. Not just fully mature but beginning a very slow decline. Nonetheless the depth of fruit, richness of the tar, smoke, herb, and sous bois is terrific. — 2 hours ago
