Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2019

Splash decanted and enjoyed over the course of two hours. The 2019 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of Morello cherry, red flowers, black tea, dried green herbs and gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and has that Ciacci Piccolomini silkiness. I felt the 2019 was a little reticent for the first 30min (not at all surprised) but opened beautifully after that and continued to build steam until the last glass. Very easy to enjoy and fabulous with bolognese. Drink now with a 30min decant and through 2044 — a month ago

The nose shows classic BdM aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, steeped black tea, tobacco, and a whisper of balsamic. Yet on the palate its tart acidity overwhelmed, and the nimble structure is more inline with CC than a BdM.

Not bad, but I certainly expected much more.

Oh Wow!!! Bright ruby color. Aromas of cedar, smoke, exotic spices, rose petals and bright cherry fruit. Flavors of crushed plums and black cherry fruit, black licorice, tobacco and prunes. Lovely herbal, spice, mineral and floral notes on the long and concentrated finish. Fine grained tannins and full bodied. Perfect balance of power, complexity and finesse. Outstanding and Classic! Felt a little sad when I noticed the bottle was empty. Thanks so much to Kasey and Petey for sharing this one. — 8 months ago

This is an old friend. An old experience I've had before but different. Younger, with more time needed to open but as the wine changes and evolves, its reminiscent to those brunellos of the past. This may not be the most ideal brunello year but it definitely satisfies the experience. Sometimes i wonder if any brunello will come close to those brunellos I had in the past but as the time passes, things evolve and change and maybe youll get glimmers of those brunellos but nothing exact. Well this is the first brunello of this decade of 2020, so we will see what the future holds! Definitely worth another try but after its aged a few months or years. Good nonetheless. — 9 months ago

2017 was hot. Ripe to tart red/dark cherries, blackberries , blackcurrant. The fruity notes were quite tight. Hints of black Liqorice and a lot of the earth, herbs and tannin shown through. This is still a beautiful wine., but I preferred the 2018.

Because when my wife spends all day making her bolognese, I have to give her something nice to drink. This one was in perfect shape, with gorgeous cherry and orange peel and cedar layered over leather and earth. Great acids suggest this has another 5-10 in it easily. — 6 years ago

We had a vertical tasting with 2007. Both excellent. 07 lighter in color. 07 a little more fragrant. Both had tastes of leather tobacco and black cherry. Both medium bodied. Going forward, I will drink Brunello sooner than 20 years. Some fruit got lost a bit — 2 months ago

Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2021

2021 vintage. Medium-medium heavy body. Trademark voluptuousness/ blanket swaddling there in the early/mid going. Fell off on the finish with a bit of lingering tartness. Loved the 2016 and 2017. This is that but it ain't (all) that if you know what I mean. 3.25.26. — 3 months ago

One of my 3-4 BdM favorite producers. Haven’t tried any 20:ies vintages yet.

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Second time trying this from the 2015 vintage, first enjoyed five years ago. This was my Christmas Day wine, when it’s always hard to really appreciate or concentrate on a wine what with everything else going on! I ordinarily go for familiar favourites from the Rhône, or aged Bordeaux. Anyway, this Brunello was still super macho, austere and in need of either more time in bottle or some very rustic, Tuscan food. Or both! — 6 months ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2019

Shoe leather on the nose. Red fruit on the front. Light tannic structure. Not much body. What body there is fades on the end. Short finish. Except for the slight scent of mouldy shoe leather on the nose, there’s nothing objectionable about this wine, but it’s weak and watery and without much character. Meh. But wait!…

I left the remainder in the bottle, and 24 hours later it had developed quite nicely. The nose had developed into unripe cherries—losing the moldy leather smell. Red fruit developed on the front, and the tannic structure improved. And it developed a longer finish. I upped my rating from an 8.6 to 9.0.

This sample was given to me. Tannins are resolved to the point of almost nonexistent. A fair amount of acid with what little fruit was dark and baked. Cherries leather and tobacco leaf. Darn yummy but I wish I had some food with it. — 3 months ago

Il Marroneto

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2001

Opened a few hours prior to service and enjoyed with dinner over the course of a couple hours. The 2001 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing (still!) with notes of Morello cherry, raspberries, red flowers, oolong tea, leather, and dry earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. The Il Marroneto only gained power with time. Looking back on my notes, the last time I had the 2001 Classico was nearly ten years ago (and I had enjoyed it a few times before that). Since then, I’ve learned a lot about the aging arc of Sangiovese and those experiences were just entering the early drinking window for the 2001 Il Marroneto. This is where I really like them. Drink now with patience and plenty of air and through 2036. Bottle No. 6064 — 6 months ago

Huge producer but all organic. Cranberry, cherry, orange peel, tobacco leaf, carob, perfect smidge of VA to keep things interesting. Ripe, tactile tannins. Touch hot at 14.5%. Drink or hold with or without food. I preferred the balance of this on day 2. — 8 months ago

So young still. Bricking a little with garnet color. Rose garden, leather, plum, cherries, black currant, spice box, cedar on the nose. Still somewhat austere after 4 hours of air. Could be mistaken for a left bank. Tannin is powerful and this seems like it could keep aging for some time. Not as balanced as when I had it last time. — 4 years ago
