Azienda Il Violone

Dòrino Toscana 2018

Very dark rubi robe. Nose of blackcurrant, dark fruits, cedar and asian spices. Hard to have details, not a lot of info available. Modern styled but truly well done. Its an IGT so not traditional Chianti blend. But does seem to have a good dose of Sangiovese. Was excellent next day. We liked it a lot. — a year ago

Mazzella

Ischia Biancolella 2017

I’m not really sure where the 8.8 ratings for this are coming from - maybe a different vintage - but this wine is fantastic. Great aromas of tropical fruits of all things on the nose, along with melon and maybe a hint of candied lemon. Beautiful mouthfeel with a rich, enveloping flavor profile. Definitely a warmer climate Italian white (from Campagna, so obviously I guess), the wine is impeccably balanced through a lingering finish. Another amazing QPR wine from the folks at Le Volpe e l’uva in Firenze! — 7 years ago

Podere Poggio Scalette

Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve IGT Sangiovese 2021

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of dinner. The 2021 pours a deep garnet color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of black cherry, espresso, black tea, dried herbs and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Drink now with patience but, to my palate, I think this will be better with a few more years in the cellar so the oak can better integrate. This is built to last well past 2041. — 6 months ago

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi

Castello di Pomino Rosso Sangiovese Blend

Very well done white wine. It comes from an area where the climate helps building freshness and aromas. Tried cold but very nice also at room temperature. Not only citrus fruit, but also white peach on the nose/palate. — 8 years ago

San Giusto a Rentennano

Riserva Le Baroncole Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2013

Ruby, slight rim variation. Earthy, bruised red fruit, a little green on the nose. Well balanced, medium tannins. Drinking the 2013 in 2018. Purchased at Casa del Vino in Firenze. 👌 — 8 years ago

Frescobaldi

Pomino Castello Pomino 2023

Sadly This is no longer Trebbiano and Malvasia. Now it's 90% Chard and 10 % Pinot Grigio.. The Frescobaldi house pulled out all of their Malvasia and Trebbiano due to climate change (and Pomino is among the highest altitude growing regions of Tuscany) - and replaced those vines with these more hardy and more boring varieties.
Interesting that they kept the same exact name and label, but I guess it's all still accurate?

This also very sadly means no more Vin Santo.
Times they are a changing.

Fontanafredda

Serralunga d'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 2013

Nuanced and balanced fruit, tannins were balanced/subtle. Hits above the average Barolo for quality at this price point. A perfect wine for lunch to wrap up an Italy trip at a hidden gem of a wine bar in Firenze. — 3 years ago

Salcheto

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese

Had a glass of this in Firenze with fresh focaccia. Lovely. Good depth for what should be considered a ‘table wine’. However, in Italy, the wine always tastes better than back home for some reason. — 8 years ago

Azienda Agricola il Borghetto

Montigiano Sangiovese 2014

Medium ruby. More soil character than most of the other Borghetto wines in this range- mushroom and potting soil notes coming through. Wet concrete aroma and stronger sense of minerality as well. Again it’s a tart red fruit profile of pomegranate, peppermint candy, orange rind and menthol. Mid palate provides the necessary warm spice character and sweet tannins that turn much harder and more bitter on the finish. This will need more time to settle down and develop its fruit, but very complex and showing some great potential. — 8 years ago
