Love Cork Screw

The Calling Wines

Dutton Ranch Chardonnay 2023

Cork pull from the WCO fundraising event, and definitely a good win! Classic cali chard... Apple and pear, a bit of citrus, and a good amount of oak without overpowering butteriness. The kind of chard that helped me fall in love with wine 💕 — 8 months ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

1995 vintage. Great aging cork in good shape. Decanted and tasted immediately, after 30 mins and after 2 hours. Decent amount of sed. Slight brickish color. Initially and generally throughout, reticent nose and flavors. Very tightly wound overall. Eventually able to coax a small amount of black olive out of the nose along with minerals for days. Some dark cherry and plum allied with baking chocolate in the transition from mid-palate to finish. It was tough sledding in the frontal palate. Super dry with summer earth/dirt at the start. Obvious class but never really flashed more than a few cards to play. Perhaps a different bottle shows a little more love? Producer is always on the leaner side so unbridled optimism on that front is likely wasted energy. 10.25.23. — 3 years ago

Wittmann

Morstein Großes Gewächs Riesling 2012

Mid Lemon in colour. A 10 year old GG from the Rheinhessen - not a hint of TDN (Kerosene/Petrol notes in aged Riesling). Just been reading a research paper on TDN from the Australian Wine Research Institute. Definitely sunshine to the extent of sunburnt grapes is a big factor. Also a fact I wasn’t aware of that cork allows TDN to release more than with a screw cap. This GG had a cork, although personally I would prefer a screw cap particularly with a Riesling. This Wittmann showed peach and mineral - also white flowers ( Daisies, Barb thought). Enough acid to keep things lively and delicious - some herbs. Enough fruit richness and sweetness to almost convince you that it is off dry but it is actually 13% ABV. An excellent dry German Riesling worthy of the Grosses Gewachs classification. A very high score of 19/20 from Michael Schmidt. — 4 years ago

More greatness here. I love these more with each bottle. Perfect summer drinking. This wine makes me happy., simple as that. Yes, it’s complex and aromatic and all of those things. Not what I focus on with these anymore. Just love them as soon as I pop the cork. — 6 years ago

La Landonne Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2019

2019 vintage. Last tasted 3.8.25 (9.6) and 8.19.23 (9.5). Excellent fill and great cork. Decanted and tasted after 30 minutes. Small amount of chunky sed. Medium-heavy body but starting to slowly thin out. Excellent colo(u)r. Alongside the roasted nuts and smoked meats flavors, this drops a current cola-nut driven finish. Smooth and harmonious. Love this producer along with a nod to consumers/wine trade for keeping these ridiculous pricings down. 10.10.25. — 9 months ago

Casanuova delle Cerbaie

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 1999

Nose has ripe plum, cedar shavings, dried blackberry, over-ripe black cherry, crushed black currant, menthol syrup and dried violets.

Palate has dried black currant, moist soil, cedar shavings, moist cigar, ripe blackberry, dried black cherry, rose hip tea with light tannins.

A beautiful cork, almost no soak; pulled clean with a standard screw. This is really in the zone tonight after a 6H decant. Drink 2022-2028 from proper storage.

Paired to Allen Bros USDA Prime Hanger with Dijon/Rosemary/Garlic/Lemon Zest marinade. Grilled to great 130° centers, 10m rise/rest to absolute perfection.
(I was honestly fighting with two cats to eat dinner tonight.)

So delicious. Plums, black cherry and Christmas spices. Lots going on and lots to love about it. This wine will also have a special place in our hearts because it was the first wine we opened after our son was born. Unbeknown to us before pulling it, the cork says "Love Your Mother". — 6 years ago

@Alex Lallos I think it goes back to at least 2001. But certainly would say it's time to revisit. Not many values in Napa now, and this is certainly one.

Anthill Farms

Campbell Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

First of all Kudos to Ant Hill love the wax seal over cork! Deep Ruby with aromas of dark Berry fruits with notes of herbs, citrus, floral and earthy spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry and cherry, tea, vanilla and herb tones, well balanced with acidity. Firm fine tannins on a long finish ending with fruit and floral herb character. Very nice! Will age well! — 3 years ago

Pietranera

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2004

Definitely worth the wait! Some folks said this vintage was at its peak several years ago but my patience is being rewarded!! Again, the cork was unbelievably tight but with perseverance a good waiters friend, finally wrestled it out without breaking. This wine definitely needs some air and time to settle down and get the full flavor and taste restored. I can taste parmigiana regganio, bruschetta, high grade EVOO and balsamic with a crusty bread. Veal and tomato sauce, even Osso Buco. I love Brunello and while this is not considered a top iteration, it’s still definitely worth drinking. — 3 years ago

Château Gazin

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1985

AMAZING BORDEAUX that’s still able to shine, decanted, after a few hours of opening! In ritual notes of damp leather, subdued / dried fruits and felt past its prime. 2 hours later - completely blossomed into this robust, aged, beautiful almost “fruit forward” masterpiece with almost olive overtones. I’m sure it was a great bottle 10, 20, even 30 years ago - but now it’s almost better as it’s transformed into this subtle, wonderful wine which was able to hold its own against aged cheese and roasted beef. A true treasure I’m glad we uncorked!! (BTW - cork was LONG - get your longest screw out for this one)!!! — 4 years ago

Val do Sosego

Rías Baixas Albariño 2019

Very nice for the price point.

Love Albariño, am I going to the seaside, am I going Tropical, bitting lemons... ? Should we come up with a scale, like the sugar ladder on bottles of Riesling?

Slap you awake, crisp lemony acidity, some stainless, mineral in the direction of salinity but could also be a fusion of stainless and acidity, slight waxy floral.

Bright yellow synthetic cork was fun, noticeable, and investigable. Orange would be more aligned with the hues in the label, but, thats just me.

11’ Clendenen Bricco Buon Natale Nebbiolo. 5 years in 500L Hungarian oak.
Pulled the cork 2 hour ahead of me decanting it at the restaurant. Garnet in color.
Popping cherry/cedar on the nose. Red cherry, red roses, cranberries… Flashy.
Bright acidity. Medium tannins. Never would’ve guessed the wine to be 9 years old. Love Jim’s wines. 7/10 years in the bottle.

Bodegas de los Infantes Orleans-Borbon

Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda Manzanilla Fina

Nose of honey, walnuts, curry powder, smokey, toasty oak, lemon cough drops.

Quite complex on the palate: lime, salt, honey, almond, white flowers, and some salty mineral bitterness with very good acidity.

Delicious and complex. Also love that it's in a 375 mL screw top. I need to drink more sherry.

This was ready to go the moment the cork was pulled. The juicy blue and black fruits just about leap from the glass and the palate, wow, just fabulous. Sweet, juicy tannins gush across it leading to a long, intoxicating finish. Love everything I’ve had from this producer. — 8 years ago
