Mount Eden Vineyards

Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

2012 vintage. Mount Eden Vineyards wine dinner @Mister A’s Restaurant-San Diego. Decanted and tasted after opening and 4hrs later. Dark and dense nose and flavors at the onset. Medium body but very very close to light-medium. Tasting 4 hrs later, wine had gained a little weight with a grippy consistency and plenty of dark fruit/espresso love. Wine has dropped all the baby fat and entered “the zone.” Just below cresting the top of the bell curve and set up for a decade+ of top-notch pleasure. 4.20.23. — 3 years ago

Pizza Port Brewing Co.

Swami's India Pale Ale

The current West Coast IPA standard. Consistently fantastic in the 16oz can but catching it on draft at one of the various Pizza Port properties takes it up just a notch with slightly less dank and super clean high notes on the initial draw. Essential San Diego County brewha. — 5 years ago

Los Pilares

La Dona's Sparkling Muscat

Love it. Super aromatic and tropical on the nose. Peaches, mango, and apricots. But none of that fruit comes through on the palate. More grapefruit, super minerally, lots of sediment and funk. Bone dry. — 10 years ago

@Ericsson Oh what I’d give to rifle through 4-6 decent wines with 4-6 decent palates in the space of 3-4 hours…been too long. Happy you made it in. Hope you enjoyed. Had to bounce unfortunately before potentially compromising your palate with some skanky/tawdry reds. Next time. Best wishes always.

Live Oak Vineyard

Estate Syrah 2017

Dark purple in color with a purplish rim.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Smooth and elegant.

Dry on the palate and fruit forward.

Showing blackberries, cooked plums, spices, light oak, licorice, herbs, light black tea and peppercorn.

Tangy finish with soft tannins and cranberries.

This 5 year old Syrah from San Diego County is drinking very nicely. Peaking now. Spicy, tangy and interesting.

Needs 30 minutes to open up properly and remove some of the acidity.

Easy drinking and good by itself or with food.

Aged in French oak barrels for 20 months. A tiny production of only about 250 bottles.

90 points.

$30.

AleSmith Brewing Company

Nut Brown English-Style Ale

Once only a draft release, now it bottles, hands down one of the best brown ales in the world, perfect in the style, roasted, toasted malts, nutty and very smooth, not over sweet, coffee and chocolate notes, but in the style, so not like a porter, easy drinking, very easy to session, if you are fan of this style, like New Castle, this is far superior — 10 years ago

Fattoria dei Barbi (Colombini)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2012

At Coci Northpark San Diego. The wine. Food excellent. Very very difficult to evaluate. I think they used too much oak on this. Ridiculous big and tannic even after 12 years. And after 90 minutes. I tough it is corked at first and even at 60min. Tobacco, cigar box. Touch cherry hint of prune plum. And better with a t-bone than with the light Italian food.I think they really overdid it to please - May be Robert Parker - at the time? Give it at least 2 hours to breathe before serving!!!! — a year ago

Domaine du Grand Tinel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape White Rhone Blend 2022

2022 vintage. @ Mister A’s Restaurant, San Diego-Les Caves de St. Charles CDP dinner. 100% Roussanne-driven. Initial mineral indication of interest, broad mid-palate transition, yang-styled, white grape “fat” on the judiciously-honeyed finish. Wowzers. Grab you some if you can find it. 95 cases produced. Good luck with that. 11.16.23. — 3 years ago

Los Pilares

Grenache Carignan Blend 2013

Los Pilares San Diego County Red Blend 2013: Fresh. Natural. Extraordinary. Consisting of 50% Grenache & 50% Carignan, this was a light-bodied, extremely unique wine. Red fruits (cranberry & cherry). Plum. Earth. Short finish. For me, the wine was a bit thin on structure but very clean & natural tasting. This was my first San Diego County wine and it left me quite intrigued & impressed. Hoping to explore other San Diego wines in the near future. Cheers🍷 — 5 years ago

Ruination Double IPA

Surprisingly, I kinda liked this despite my aversion to overly-hopped beers. The nose is a straight up hop-bomb - floral, citrusy, piney. The palate's also full-on, with heaps of hoppy bitterness, but balanced by malty sweetness and tropical fruit notes (passionfruit and mango for me). Finishes crisp and earthy. Not bad, but not my kind of beer (not an IPA fan basically). — 7 years ago
