Ma Douce Sonoma County Chardonnay 2021

One of those times they can’t claim to be a professional and just describe what I’m saying. Unfiltered, the wine is cloudy intention because it definitely affects the taste. You just get a bit of Dusty greediness in the flavor and while the smell is pure and clean crisp. The taste has a bit of exposure you gonna have to chew what’s going on. Lemon curd, waxy, unripe peach, some greedy dust from you not washing your fruits before you eat them. The acidity is there, but with the unfiltered nitrate seems like it doesn’t fully express the structure but it’s interesting because I haven’t had a wine like this so I don’t really know what I’m talking about. It seems like it’s a tight wine at the same time. There’s something in there that just makes it linger and chew and coat your tongue. Really enjoyed it completely. — 25 days ago

Joli Coeur Sonoma County Pinot Noir 2021

2021 vintage. First go-round with this wine. Winery produces “pretty” wines and this is no different. Medium-medium heavy bod. Consistent, smooth push with dried cranberry leading the charge. No heart-stopping or scary moments. Enjoyable. 3.13.26. — 3 months ago

El Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay 2016

16’Arista UV-EL Diablo Chardonnay. What makes these wines so absolutely fantastic since 2013...to me it is obvious, Matt has turned this winery around. If you like a hammer style Chardonnay such as Kongsgaard/Morlet/Peter Michael. This is not necessarily your wine.
Chardonnay that’s not heavily coded by let’s say vanilla Bean “You guess it”Elegance/finesse/balanced & CLASSY. Unlike his Ferren Wines (Love them)this has slightly less punch. Highly recommend.

La Proportion Dorée Sonoma County Sémillon Blend 2018

9.4

Last bottles from a 6-pack. I had two bottles that were sadly riddled with EA, but the other four were sound.

This was one of the wines I served for my annual WWC hosting. All wines served blind.

65 semillon/ 34 Sauvignon Blanc/ 1 Muscadelle

Always love these, more so than most domestic Bordeaux Blanc style white wines, mostly because of the texture. Straw color in the glass. Quite the tropical aromatics (white peach, mango) but it’s not overpowering. The barrel ferment is apparent with the rounded profile on the palate…the vein of acidity that was there a few years ago is fading, so this showed even more opulent than normal. Honeyed lemon, guava, orange blossom but a backbone of sea salt and herbs snap the structure in place to show nice balance and a nod to Bordeaux. I’d recommend popping now and over the next couple years to enjoy the freshness.

Les Petits Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

2018 vintage. So close to a 9.5, you can taste it. Medium-heavy body. Sexy and voluptuous without any corresponding flabbiness. Smooth and decadent with just enough backbone to (barely) keep this grounded. Btg at $35 a glass here in the next week. 4.1.26. — 3 months ago

Hugel et Fils

Jubilee Alsace Riesling 2009

Shay A
9.4

*pic of the white wines* One of the wines I supplied for an annual lunch hosting (co-host this time), along with the 2018 Morlet LpD. 2009 was the last year Hugel used “Jubilee” before moving to “Grossi Laüe”. This is Hugel’s “Grand Cru” selection from their Schoenenbourg vineyard.

Undeniably Alsatian Riesling in the glass from first whiff…floral, minerals, and only slightly TDN (petrol) aromatic driven, but noticeable power. Vintage (and age) has helped this reach a fantastic drinking window where acidity and flavor profile are in balance and not fighting each other. Ripe herb-crusted yellow fruits alongside limestone/mineral in a powerful profile. There is warmth to this vintage and it makes an appearance in how fleshy the wine is (which is great). At almost 16yrs, there is no rush, but this drinking window is exceptional.

I have a fondness for Alsatian Riesling, especially from the OG producers. These older Hugel wines (either Jubille or the new Grossi Laue designation) are always a treat.

Jarvis Winery

Estate Grown Cave Fermented Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Shay A
9.4

On my first trip out to Napa (2015), Jarvis was one of the favorites, and so we went back in 2016 and again in 2018. We go to Napa every year, and it’s one of the only wineries we have visited multiple times.

This was part of a retrospective on 2012 Napa cabs, alongside Shafer HSS, Scarecrow, Morlet CdV, Bryant DB4, Dominus, Pulido Walker Melanson, Kapscandy, Buccella Cuvee Katrina Eileen and others. Definitely the most restrained.

For some reason, I always get a streak of green peppercorn on all of the reds from Jarvis. It’s not off putting, just a signature of the winemaking. I’ve never found these wines to be overblown/high alcohol. They aren’t quite Bordeaux like, but they are clearly in between current Napa style and a restrained bridge to Bordeaux. This 2012 was true to the above. Aromatics here has green peppercorn, tar, underripe black fruits and a very fragrant potpourri note. Even after being open a few hours this was strong with zippy acidity surrounded by pepper crusted blackberries, mocha, black cherries and even some leather (not Brett driven, though). Blind, maybe someone takes this to left bank Bordeaux in a ripe vintage…but the kiss of sweetness is hard to take away from Napa. Wonderfully delicious and complex Cabernet starting to enter a great drinking window.
