Paltrinieri

Sant' Agata Lambrusco di Sorbara

Shatters all preconceived notions of what one expect. Lambrusco to be. Pale reddish orange hue. Taut and clean with persistent fine bubble, not just a fizz. Tart fruits like pomegranate and underripe strawberries. — a year ago

Azienda Agricola Elvio Cogno

Anas-Cëtta Langhe Bianco Nascetta di Novello 2022

“Ana’s-Cëtta” is the white #Nascetta wine by @elviocogno who helped bring the variety back from near extinction in the 1990s in the commune of Novello, #Langhe, #Piedmont.

The 2022 delivers aromas of honeysuckle, white peach, verbena and Mediterranean herbs. Apple, pear, quince and pineapple flavors then come into play. This quickly followed by a waxy texture, balanced by lime zest, with notions of crushed minerals on the finish.

The winery suggests it is “ideal as an accompaniment to vegetable dishes, white meats, raw fish, oysters and creamy cheeses.” Maybe not as ideal, but paired with rigatoni, sausage and fennel allowed some contrast to expose and heighten many of the sensations…BRAVO!

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Bolgheri Red Bordeaux Blend 2020

Deep ruby with inky saturation, the 2020 Ornellaia is sublime. Mingling precise aromas of wild blueberries, black cherries, blackcurrant, violets, crushed rocks and cigar box with notions of clove, mint and iodine. Full-bodied yet spherical in the mouth, this Tuscan beauty shows excellent flavour concentration, fresh acidity and pixelated, polished tannins, providing a firm structure. Drink from 2028 until 2050. — 3 years ago

Château Canon

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Canon bursts from the glass with expressive notions of baked black cherries, kirsch, plum preserves and black raspberries plus hints of red roses, Ceylon tea, black olives and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully elegant and refined, with a soft, finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend is 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and it was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. — 5 years ago

Hartford Court

Far Coast Vineyard Chardonnay 2015

It explodes from the glass with gregarious allspice and nutmeg notions over a core of warm peaches, guava, and pear tart with suggestions of gingerbread and toast. Medium-bodied, the palate is much more elegant and restrained than the nose suggests, delivering seriously minerally notes and loads of freshness, finishing long and chalky. — 5 years ago

Nice description. Not over done. Was fairly impatient in drinking the 2015’s. Nice pull.

Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016

Continuing with my summer of exploring whites. FRESH and tangy. Grapefruit and lemon zest. Nice acidity, but well balanced and some depth. Not anything like my preconceived notions of what a Chardonnay should be. Just wonderful. — 6 years ago

Domaine Ostertag

Fronholz Vendanges Tardives Gewürztraminer 2018

Delectable Wine
9.2

With 120 g/L of residual sweetness, the 2018 Gewurztraminer Fronholz Vendanges Tardives opens with notions of blossom honey, Damask rose and juicy lychee. The mouthfeel is luscious, round and brimming with sweet yellow peach compote. The rose perfume pervades everything with its floral intensity. This is a dessert in itself, concentrated less by botrytis than by passerillage, preserving the varietal integrity and a super-charged purity of fruit. This needs careful pairing but will outlast us all. (Anne Krebiehl, Vinous, April 2023) — 3 years ago

TOR Kenward Family Wines

Tierra Roja Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

RP95Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A barrel sample, the deep garnet-purple colored 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard comes bounding out of the glass with notions of ripe red plums, Morello cherries and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of pencil shavings, violets and camphor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with “Juicy red and black fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and background”. I can’t say it better than Parker! I always love Wine from Tor - Great vineyard source.

Dominio del Aguila

Reserva Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2016

No one has said it better than Eric Guido. " I found silky textures with brisk acids, minerals and sweet spice adding vibrancy, as juicy notions of cherry and raspberry washed across the senses leaving a coating of fine tannin." Eric sabe vinos tintos de España. — 5 years ago

Château Puech-Haut

Rita's Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

One word: sexy. An absolutely explosive nose of dried violet and assorted flower petals, Asian five spice, sweet licorice, succulent strawberries, rhubarb, smoke/flint. Even though Russell is my favorite winemaker I still, up until this point, had not tried any of his Pinots, nor had any pre-conceived notions as to how his Pinots should drink. As such, I kept my expectations comfortably in check. But wow...this is full-throttle, deep, suave, and downright sensual. Freakin’ love it. — 6 years ago

Suavia

Monte Carbonare Soave Classico Garganega 2021

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2021 Soave Classico Monte Carbonare is decidedly savory, displaying notes of crushed rocks and dried flowers that give way to white peach and hints of gingery spice. It sweeps across the palate with a silky, textural wave of liquid florals and ripe pit-fruits, riding along a core of vibrant acidity. Notions of candied lime and saline minerals linger through the long and youthfully tense finale as the 2021 leaves a confectionary air of spice. (Eric Guido, Vinous, February 2024)

Domaine François Raveneau

Valmur Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2013

Such an underrated vintage both red and white. Raveneau‘s 2013 Valmur is electric from the first pour wafting killer yellow fruit intensity, white chocolate, white flowers, notions of sea breeze and a little botrytis influenced saffron. The palate is deep, waxy and rich with balanced zippy citrusy acids and a crushed oyster shell minerality that gives way to a considerably long, focused and lifted finish. Fantastic bottle. — 4 years ago

Screaming Eagle

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

6 bottles... Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Screaming Eagle soars out of the glass with vibrant notions of ripe blackberries, black cherries and fresh red and black currants plus wafts of licorice, candied violets, cedar chest and clove oil with a beguiling touch of sea spray. Medium-bodied with jaw-dropping elegance, the palate is finely textured and yet built like a brick house with a super taut backbone and exquisitely knit acidity. The intense black and red fruit flavors are accented by layers of mineral and floral notions, finishing with incredible length and depth. Undeniably stunning. — 5 years ago

Serragghia Bianco Secco Zibibbo 2017

One of the most fascinating wines I move had in recent memory. Smoke and citrus fruit on the nose. The power on those aromatics defies description. Tropical fruit and fresh, bright acid across the palate. This is the best I can do to describe it. This defies descriptors. All I can say is if you have preconceived notions about wine in general, get a bottle of this to change them. Absolutely amazing. — 6 years ago

@Anthony Lombardi Yes found the note. It makes a dessert style made by Donnafugatta called Ben Rye. Grown on the Isle of Pantellaria in the Mediterranean - actually closer to Africa than Europe. Ben Rye is a stunning dessert style made from Zibibbo.
