Saint Amour, Beaujolais

Domaine des Pins

Les Pierres Saint Amour Gamay 2020

Clear, medium ruby in color with a hint of garnet on the rim; on the nose, it's clean with medium intensity primary aromas of raspberries, potting soil, and flowers; on the palette, it's dry with high acidity, low tannins, medium alcohol, medium body, and medium intensity primary flavors of red currants, sour cherries, and strawberries with a long finish. This wine has enough fruit to balance the acidity. It's complex and balanced. Overall, I rate this wine as very good.Nellie likes it too. — 2 months ago

Saint-Amour Gamay 2018

Delectable Wine
9.0

Shimmering ruby. Expressive black raspberry, cherry cola and violet scents pick up mineral and spice nuances with air. Nicely concentrated yet lively on the palate, offering juicy bitter cherry, dark berry and exotic spice flavors that turn sweeter on the back half. Discreet tannins shape the floral-tinged finish, which hangs on with very good persistence. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, August 2021)

Saint-Amour Côte de Besset Gamay 2018

Beaujolais pleasure with the intensity usually found on Saint-Amour. Notes of sour cherry red fruits, rose, peony, and a certain concentration that will appeal to those who like more structured wines. It is nonetheless a generous wine with immediate pleasure. Very / too easy to drink

50-year old vines close to Fleurie and Chiroubles (more pink granite soil). Dark garnet color, black tea and strawberry. Fresh with light tannins, but not much structure or acidity. Great for immediate drinking. — 3 months ago

Château des Bachelards

Comtesse de Vazeilles Saint amour Gamay 2017

Yes, these guys do Beaujolais in a Bordeaux bottle.

Great nose features ripe cherry and berries, along with a rich, humus-like earthy note and scents of old barrels. Fruity but fairly structured in the mouth. Significant tannin frames the sultry, oozy fruit. Initially, it’s a little austere in the finish (a la the region whose bottle shape is used), but more fruit comes through as it gets air. Unique and very good.

Thibault Liger-Belair

Vieilles Vignes Moulin-à-Vent Gamay 2016

One of my favorites in the in Bourguignon-style of Beaujolais are those of Thibault Liger-Belair. What I adore about Thibault’s approach is that his winemaking philosophy seems to suit M-à-V so well. Popped and poured; no formal notes. The 2016 “Moulin-à-Vent VV” is full of the undeniable dark fruit and structure and yet, incorporates a funky charm that seems to bridge Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaujolais perfectly. To my palate, these 2016 VV’s are just entering the early part of their drinking window. I still think this is developing and it will take another few years before the secondary characteristics begin to show and that’s when the magic really starts to show with these wines. All of the pieces and parts are there…all that is required at this point s a little more patience. Good now but better with a little patience and after 2026. Should be awesome well through 2036 — 3 years ago

Marc Delienne

Arpay À la Folie Saint-Amour Gamay 2017

Of the 2020 releases from Marc Delienne (which has been quite the trip to work through), this was the cheapest, cleanest, and my favourite. Needs a little air to unfurl aromas of pomegranate, raspberry, and tomato leaves. Bright and juicy, with a rich texture to boot. Nice underlying minerality and spice. Finished in one seating, so a one in the binary scale. — 5 years ago

Domaine des Billards (Héritiers Loron)

Clos des Billards Saint-Amour Gamay 2019

American geography ignoramus that I am, little did I know that the Northernmost tip of the Rhone- Cote Rotie- is the kissing cousin of Beaujolais. St. Amour is more midpoint, but has that great granite terroir which makes this long standing Cru Bojo (& under 20$) a perennial fave. It’s that mineral tautness I love. — 5 years ago
