Krug

Grande Cuveé 166ÈME Édition Brut Champagne Blend

Here I am during my last evening in New Zealand drinking Champagne. We went to one of the old fashioned department stores to buy some NZ chocolate to bring back home and I happen to wander into the wine section where I find this 166 which I always enjoyed a lot. Thanks to the Kiwi dollar exchange rate this was just 170 USD and I could not resist :). This is such a beautiful champagne with toasted nut and brioche aromas - unmistakenly a Krug and a well-made classic that drinks exceptionally well right now. — 4 years ago

Le Clos du Caillou / Domaine du Caillou

Les Quartz Côtes du Rhône Red Rhone Blend 2015

The quality for price is outstanding. In 1936 “Caillou’s owner had no desire to join the governing ranks of anything, let alone a wine appellation. This brazen act excluded the estate from the AOC and essentially carved out a chunk of Châteauneuf-du-Pape‘s border. Today it continues to be an ‘unclassified’ section in what is otherwise some of the most prized vineyard land in the area“-Ian Cauble, master sommelier — 5 years ago

Bodega Garzon

Reserva Maldonado Tannat 2016

This wine I picked up this week thinking it was from Chile because it was in the Chile section of the store I frequent. I thought this tannat would be interesting to try. I was just going off knowing about tannat, so I picked it up. I did not read the label as closely I usually do. When I decided to open this 2016 Bodega Garzón Tannat Reserve I finally read the label closely and found that it is from Uruguay. What a pleasant surprise and I am happy I picked this up.

The nose was very pungent upon opening with a very heavy funk so I let it open up for an hour. After an hour the fruit started to show themselves. There is still the presence of funk but not as heavy as when first opened then the black fruits came out, black cherry, black raspberry, lack plum, baker's chocolate, vanilla and smoke.

On the palate the beautiful black fruit continues with black cherry, black plum, blackberry, dark spice, just a hint of well blended oak, smoke and rich soil.

This wine is full bodied with a well rounded mouth feel with medium + acidity and medium + leaning more to the plus side firm tannins that lead to a long dark fruit finish. A continued wonderful weekend to you all and please stay safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

ask the wine guy for something unusual, something off the beaten path and he recommends this delicious dry 100% Palomino w/some bottle age: definitely a food wine, light greenish straw color w/fairly austere nose full of minerals, lanolin, herbaceous musk, white flowers (jasmine), ginger & some spices. on palate it is rigid & angular, zesty acidity, some citrus but mostly minerals & herbs, quinine, screams for briny foods - we had this w/deli section fare & salad. — 8 months ago

Edith Grenache Rosé 2018

My last of a 3-pack. The fruit is from the Armada Vineyard in a special two row section that is used solely for rosé.

Compared to the 2017 I had in 2020, I found this to be more mellow (not sure if it is due to vintage or the fact that this has almost four years of age compared to when I had the 2017 it had three years of age). Much more pale pink and extremely Provençal. Watermelon rind, cantaloupe and a very mineral driven aromatic profile. Not as tangy/iron driven as the 2017 I had, but the acidity seems brighter. Rose petals, black cherry skin and dragonfruit on the palate with more stony/mineral notes. No way anyone takes this to WA state (let alone Cayuse). Incredibly French. I’d consume in the next year or two, but certainly has the bones to hold on for a bit

Au Bon Climat

Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014

Planted in 1971, the fruit was selected from the oldest section of Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. Aromas of berry fruit with subtle floral and spice, aged for 22 months in new French oak. On the palate raspberry and cherry fruit flavors, a bit crisp with light oak tones. Firm tannins, a bit tight, lingering, ending with mineral notes. Very nice, tasting well now! — 6 years ago

Domaine Jean-Louis Tribouley

L'Alba Côtes du Roussillon Carignane Blend 2007

Pulling from the dusty, hodgepodge section of the cellar tonight. Tribouley’s 2007 l’Alba is comprised of 60% Carignan and equal parts Grenache and Syrah from 35 to 70 year old vines in Latour de France village of Roussillon. Brett-tinged, with cranberry and wild raspberry, licorice, truffle, lavender, and underbrush, with fresh cracked pepper. Secondary notes of earth, tobacco, and olive, make up the gamy nuance that pervades the background. Killer juice. — 8 years ago

Beckham Estate Vineyard

Olivia's Pinot Noir Rose 2016

I had the opportunity to visit this small boutique winery today and I have to say, I am looking forward to what the future holds for them! Andrew is in the process of getting his estate biodynamic certified and he throws his own amphora pots to ferment his wines as he ferments and ages more and more in this non-traditional yet traditional method. This sort of intentionality is reflected in this rosè, as he reserves a section of his vineyard specifically for this bottling. Traditional Pinot funk, fresh peppercorn, picked watermelon and June strawberries recall a Provence-style rosè. Bright yet generous upon the entry, with fresh strawberries and cut blood orange greeting the palate, unfolding to early-season mango and ripe, orange pith, and finishing with Bing cherries, dried river stones, and acid for days. Balanced and thoughtful - just a rosè, but speaks well for the future of this winemaker. I look forward to seeing more from him! — 9 years ago

Domaine Masse Pere & Fils

En Veau Givry 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2021

2021 vintage. Excellent, entry-level producer into the vagaries of (red) Burgundy. Things only ramp up (SUBSTANTIALLY!!!) from here. 1er Cru juice in the bargain section. Focus, concentration, depth and subtlety all found within. Pick up a half-case or more for guilt-free, current pleasure. Underrated. — 2 years ago

We had this with Oxtail dinner at Rattray’s in Mala Mala last night.

Not my usual detailed notes. This is ripe & lush like the Nederburg but with more complexity.

The palate showed ripe and slightly candied fruits of; dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries and a hint of blue fruits. Nice softly layered baking spices, dark chocolate, mocha, rich, dark soils, some dry top, well done granitic minerals and fresh red and dark florals. The acidity round & beautiful. The finish, ripe, lush, well balanced & polished. Good QPR here.

Photos of, today’s Mala Mala sunrise, baby calf elephant along with the nearly 40 in the herd and a total of over 100 Elephants seen today, playful male dominance of the Giraffe’s intertwining and smacking necks/mid section and the grand prize, male spotted Leopard. An amazing finish to our last day.
