Nice Chianti. A bit feral at first - 45 mins in the decanter and a slight chill bring things into more balance. Obviously could take more time in bottle but expressing pretty well overall even at this point. Has that great Radda lifting acid finish. Nice pairing with chicken scarpariello. — 5 months ago

The 2021 Chianti Classico, 100% Sangiovese from Radda, is sublime. Aromatic and delineated, with terrific energy, the 2021 soars out of the glass. Dark cherry fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and new leather all come alive in the glass. The 2022 spent two to three months on the skins, with about 40% whole clusters. Aging was done in a combination of vessels with the goal of building complexity in the final blend. It is an exceptional wine in every way. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, July 2024)

2017 Castello di Ama L’Apparita was the wine that I pulled for the evening. Italian Merlot. Ama is an old, fortified village situated near Radda and Gaiole in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. On the nose, intense dark berries. A full bodied wine with layers of beautiful ripe fruit. Last night we opened the 2020 Brancaia Tre Rosso Toscana. From Radda in Chianti, Italy a blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

On the nose this wine upon opening is heavily reductive with notes of matchsticks and sulfur. I had to let set for over an hour and these reductive notes blew off revealing nice notes of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, eucalyptus, vanilla, dried roses and dried earth.

On the palate there is tart cherry, strawberry, tart red plum, licorice, thyme, tomato, herbs, balsamic and minerality.

This is a medium to full bodied wine with medium + to high acidity and medium + fine tannins that has a long red fruit balsamic finish. I hope everyone's weekend was fun with good wine and for the week ahead please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 3 years ago

Believe it or not, in the early 1970’s there were less than a handful productive wineries in the Radda UGA; Castello di Volpaia was one of those. Radda was simply remote and difficult to get to. However, times have changed and today, there are more than 40 active wineries! Volpaia is somewhat unique in that its vineyards are some of the highest elevation in the entire Chianti Classico zone.

Popped and poured, the 2021 “Chianti Classico” pours a light ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with light notes of cherry, orange pith, dried green herbs and earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. If Radda has a reputation for more elegant wines, then Volpaia is a leading example. While it’s more “reserved” than many others, there is substance and has a story to be shared. Drink now with some patience but I think this will be even more enjoyable in the next 5-10 years. — 2 years ago

A nice amount of complexity and structure for an annata. Nose shows macerated cherry, moist gravel, spice, rich leather. Me and my wife just polished off our last bottle from a case of these. One of the best value Chianti’s on the market. Picked up for $8.99/each at Costco a few months ago. This is an austere offering from high elevation vineyards in Radda in Chianti. Beautiful floral nose with bright cherry, plum skin and Tuscan soil. Elegant and refined for the price point. Shines with at least 30 min decant and pairs great with pizza or pasta with red sauce. — 6 years ago

Hailing from Radda in Chianti this beautiful 100% Sangiovese is grown at pretty high altitude (about 1470 ft) and is facing the most famous Pergole Torte vineyard. The wine shows a ruby red core with clear rim. The nose is seducing with ripe raspberry, cherry, violet and crushed flowers. As it opens it shows more of mineral spine and spices and a touch of smoke. In the mouth it is medium plus body with good acidity and medium tannins. I really liked it and am curious to see how it will evolve. — 6 years ago

Nice radda Chianti riserva but at this point at least not worth the $45+ price point over things like Istine or Tenuta Carleone at ~half the price or Boncie il Cinque at about the same price. Maybe in several years if it evens out? Gave it 3+ hours of air. Really a wonderful nose but the fruit doesn’t express that well and the tannins are a bit muddled. Nice refreshing acid on the finish though. — a year ago

That’s nice. Most typical Radda Chianti w/o the French oak.3 vineyards combined for some time in SS then into large Slovenian Casks. So, henceforth, just a push from the wood, not a glaze.
Blood red dirty nose, plum and spice.
Tart on the palate, bright, strawberries, cherries, a reminder of what was.
Delicious.

I am so pleased with this sangiovese that I don't believe it myself.
It looks brilliant and transparent
It feels vibrant, irony and smooth
The freshness plays all the game like in a sangio from Tuscany.
It reminds me a bit of a Rosso di Montalcino by Stella di Campalto or a good Chianti from Radda.
