António Macanita Arinto dos Açores

Slightly deeper colour than the Aurum , more lemon yellow . Quite aromatic with more yellow fruits , apricot , touch of peach , then some basalt , stony , crushed rocks . On the palate this is agaín quite intense, high acidity , light toasty note with same yellow fruits on the nose , orange rind . Long and saline , mineral on the finish . With more time in the glass this becomes even more intensely saline and mineral. From now and over the next 5 years , maybe more . Impressive . This is the Sur Lie with a mix of 3 vintages. — a month ago

Biotite Loureiro Blend

Vinho verde, not your grandmothers… which is to say biggish body, thicker viscosity, green & ripening white fruits. Enticing & serious. And for less than 17$. Savio Soares. — a year ago

Clearly I’m failing at that! 😜 I love Vinho Verde because it can have, it seems, many different expressions— like Chenin Blanc@Dave

António Macanita Arinto Dos Açores 2021

100% Arinto grapes. Straw golden color with an interesting green hue. Grapes are grown in literal cracks in the volcanic soil. Intense mineral aromas along with hints of grapefruit. The palate is full of minerals and grapefruit as well along with an infusion of lemon. Nice note of salinity on the long and lingering finish. Beautiful freshness and acidity. Fresh and persistent. Outstanding and unique! — 2 years ago

Mainada Touriga Nacional 2020

2020 vintage. Mainada Touriga Nacional from the Alentejo winery Mainova. Vinified by António Maçanita and Sandra Sarria. Unoaked. Dark red with purplish rim. Intense perfume with the typical violet of the grape variety mixed with blackberries and spices. Lots of slightly jammy fruit in the mouth while maintaining freshness with soft tannin and good spicy length. — 3 years ago

Preta Vinho Regional Alentejano Touriga Nacional Blend 2021

2021 vintage. Note that there is no Touriga Nacional in this wine, it is a blend of 40% Aragonêz, 30% Alicante Bouschet, 20% Trincadeira and 10% Castelão. Fitapreta was the project of young winemaker António Maçanita and the late consultant David Booth ( who sadly died from a heart attack at age 47 in 2012). Maçanita favours minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts and low sulfites. Terrific value, bursting with fruit and spices with a ripe tannic backbone. Aged 50% in stainless steel and 50% in neutral barrels. Abv. 14,5%. — 3 years ago

vm-Castelão CoZs de Montexuntos 2020

Fresh & juicy with crunchy black fruit and a doll, stony undercurrent. Plus just a hint of spice - allspice, cloves, anise, cinnamon. Lively & engaging.
Mid weight in the palate with bright juicy acidity, pure black fruit and slightly rustic yet v. juicy tannins. Fresh, juicy, very food friendly. Perfect match with steak frites!

Vinho Tinto Douro Red Blend

95 % Vinhão (red grape), 5% Loureiro (white grape)

Don’t be fooled by the pale color, this wine punches above its weight class. Very tannic but opens up in the glass and tastes great with a saucy chicken dish.

*From 30 year old vines planted on 1 hectare of granite soils in Vinho Verde. Organic & biodynamic farming, spontaneous fermentation, stainless steel tanks.

Maçanita

Os Canivéis Letra F Douro tinto 2020

2020 vintage. Os Canivéis Letra F Douro tinto. From sister and brother winemakers Joana and António Maçanita. Letra F refers to the lowest quality vineyards for the production of Port wines, but the Maçanitas argue that there are hidden treasures among these vineyards with very old vines. This is a field blend of 11 varieties from a vineyard in Carlão, Cima Corgo with vines between 80 and 92 years old at an attitude of 510 m. with extremely low yields (1800 kg/ ha). Aged in neutral oak. Give it some time to open up. Floral nose with raspberries lurking in the background. Medium-bodied with bright red fruit, with a focus more on freshness and elegance than sheer power, even if it features a seriously tannic backbone. Good length with retronasal fruit and minerality. Tiny production of 666 bottles ( the number of the beast, so drink at your own risk!). Abv. 14,5%. — 3 years ago

Branco de Talha Regional Alentejano 2010

2020 vintage. A blend of 70% Roupeiro and 30% Antão Vaz, vinified together in amphora by winemakers António Maçanita and Sandra Sárria. Unlike stated by one comment here, this is not oxidative whatsoever. Pear, quince, flowers and a hint of fresh mint. Medium-bodied with juicy white fruit, tight acidity, fresh herbs and very good mineral length. Abv. 12,5%. — 3 years ago

Very cool and unique wine, nice to try it again. Pears, lemons, oyster shell, crushed rocks on the nose. Beautiful salinity on the palate. A little short and one dimensional but great@expression of terroir. reminds me of a Chablis. — 4 years ago
