Avsa Island, Sea Of Marmaris

Craggy Range

Kidnappers Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

From Hawke’s Bay! A gem of a north island region I taste so many winners from. The nose is reductive struck match with sea spray and lemon rind. The palate is enviably smooth and crisp as I wish my sheets to be. Oak lily’s with vanilla bean joining tart lemon curd and honeydew. The right balance between luxury china and clean white plates why am I referencing so many housewares in this review — a month ago

Domaine François Raveneau

Blanchot Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2000

Taken to Canoe House at the Mauna Lani on the Big Island. Awesome aged Raveneau nose. Rich and heavy in the mouth. Notes of citrus, apricot, sea shells, white clay and tan spice. In the zone. Shared a glass with our server/somm. When the bill came, “we have a strict corkage policy but it’s waived when it’s Raveneau “. Ha! — 4 years ago

Suber Nero d'Avola Blend 2017

Alder Yarrow
9.2

I probably drink too many Etna wines, so for a change here’s a Sicilian wine that is NOT from the volcano. It’s from the center of the island, near the city of Caltagirone, and it’s an unusual blend of two expected grapes (Nero d’Avola and Frappato) and one fairly unexpected one (Alicante Bouschet). Grown in dense vineyards planted with head-trained bush vines at about 1000 feet above sea level, this wine has a deep garnet color and a stony core surrounded by blackberry, licorice, and black cherry fruit. At once ripe and chiseled with acidity, this is a perfect expression of Sicily in many ways. It bears the i Vigneri stamp of consultant Salvo Foti, a good sign if there ever was one on Sicilian bottles. — 5 years ago

Lay of the Land

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

This is an intense splash of citrus and lime, guaranteed to make you mad for Marlborough Sauv Blanc. A New Zealand wine using five different cool-climate vineyards that span the upper and lower Wairau Valley. Excellent paired with buttery scallops or fresh shellfish. Wonderful with pistachio crusted sea bass and mango coulis. Twist open, serve chilled and enjoy. – Naked Wines — 6 years ago

Sea Cider

Kings & Spies Cider

Pale golden white. Short brief head in pour, moderate carbonation with medium sized bubbles. Label says it’s part of Heirloom Series, 8% alcohol. Pleasant perfumed apple aromas in nose. Expected McIntosh flavor profile in mouth but much more subtle and complex than that. Ever so slightly off dry, slight astringency in finish so very gently pressed. Slight malic snap in finish. Well crafted and superior product — 7 years ago

Aragosta Vermentino di Sardegna 2025

Aragosta — Vermentino di Sardegna DOC
Sardegna, Italy 🇮🇹

Overview
A 100% Vermentino from Sardegna DOC, crafted in a fresh, coastal-driven style that captures the island’s marine influence. This is a casual, vibrant expression built on lift, salinity, and drinkability, a true Mediterranean white with energy to spare.

Aromas & Flavors
Bright lemon zest, green apple, and white peach with clear sea-breeze salinity and subtle herbal undertones. There’s a crisp citrus core that feels sharp and focused, yet never aggressive.

Mouthfeel
Lively and razor-fresh, with uplifting acidity and pronounced saline tension. It’s “crazy sharp” in precision but rounded at the edges, finishing smooth with a light, pleasant textural glide that keeps it balanced and highly approachable.

Food Pairings
Grilled shrimp, seafood linguine, oysters, calamari, light fried fish, beachside antipasti, or simply chilled on a warm afternoon.

Verdict
A bright, energetic Sardinian Vermentino that delivers exactly what you want from a coastal white, freshness, salinity, and clarity. Casual in spirit, yet technically well-balanced and satisfying.

🍷 Personal Pick
This is the type of Vermentino that makes you appreciate the island breeze in liquid form. Sharp, refreshing, and dangerously easy to drink, a reliable Mediterranean companion.

Gaia (Gaia's Estate)

Thalassitis Santorini Assyrtiko 2014

Purchased a half case of the 2014s in 2018 after visiting Santorini that summer. First bottle in about a year. With octopus dinner. Golden hue. Smells like the salty black sand beaches of the island. Sea shells, minerals etc. little honey dew melon on the nose too. The density is immediately apparent on the palette. A little briney. Some sherry and honeycomb on the palette. Fresh but also tastes older than 6 yrs. I seriously love this wine. Long finish with rich honey notes. — 6 years ago

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2012

The oak has integrated since my last tasting 81 weeks ago. Sinewy aromas of beetroot and root vegetables but still manages to be plump on the palate. Great QPR at just under $40. From Marlborough - a little Pinot Noir gem in a sea of Sauvignon Blanc. — 8 years ago

Palliser Estate

Martinborough Pinot Noir

Shows its age in the colour, it’s a lovely deep ruby with tawny edges. The nose is all raspberry but slightly stewed, again reflective of the time it’s had to unfold. Fragrant, with that distinctive New Zealand Pinot note of jasmine tea, and something like prosciutto (I mean that as a compliment). More jasmine tea on the palate, along with a seam of mineral/sea salt and lashings of fruit, both fresh and crunchy and cooked. Very fine indeed. Weighs in at 14.5 abv and there is a bit of heat to it, but nothing to worry about. Drinking superbly now and by all indications has a few more good years left. — 8 years ago

Cloudy Bay

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2024

This New Zealand Sauvignon blanc offers a bright nose with notes of lime, grapefruit, tropical fruit and sea salt at the end. It is a dry, acidic, medium bodied wine. Flavours of grapefruit and mango are present on the palate. It has a long finish beginning with tropical fruits and ending with sea salt. This wine paired well with sushi. — 5 months ago

Folium Vineyard

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Folium - Sauvignon Blanc - Brancott Valley - south island has clay rich soil which leads to a stoney mineral driven wine. Acid levels are medium and grass is understated. Drinks like a bone dry WA style wine. Which is a taste profile compliment.
Amazing wine for those who want an upscale SB, distinctively different from the sea of average Sauv blancs out there.

Fina Caro Maestro 2015

We have become really intrigued with wines for Sicily. Who would have thought that such nice rich, complex, well structured and sometimes rather funky wines can come from this island where in my mind the nights would be too warm this far south....but I have never been there. Perhaps the influence of the sea, the unique terroir, slopes and elevations do the magic. This is a Bordeaux blend. Bone dry, powerful rounded tannins, dark tobacco infused cherry, blackberry. Different nuances shown up up in different layers as it evolves from the front to the back of your mouth and ultimately your throat where it lingers. Apparently Sicily grows grapes around the island. These are grown on the west side with a direct view on the Mediterranean Sea. The most minerally complex wines come from the slopes of Mnt Edna, still an active volcano using the Nero d’Avola grape... but that is all together a total different wine. — 6 years ago

Mt. Beautiful

North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2015

Sultry with a dense nose of cobalt fruit. On the palate huckleberrry and cherry lunge and sway like youths in favelas practicing capoeira on steep hillsides with views of the sea. Vibrant ruby body. Whorly tannins, violet, cacao, and earth linger to the finish. — 8 years ago
