Domaine Tour Saint-Michel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2003

Quite pale in color after 21 years. Very port wine like. Was too busy for detailed notes. Winner of the evening. — a year ago

Domaine Lise & Bertrand Jousset

Bubulle Pét' Nat' Montlouis-sur-Loire Chenin Blanc 2018

Hit of pear (Asian pear?) on the nose and a little just-mown lawn. Complex, almost busy, palate darting from one thing to the next: sweet, savory, tart and citric. Long sweet-sour finish. Fantastic!

Signal Fire Calistoga Zinfandel

Big plum, blackberry, and dark cherry flavors. Black pepper. Plenty of zippiness. A bit of earthiness. Delicious with pizza. Excellent wine. — 3 months ago

Figgins

Walla Walla Valley Riesling 2021

We had a busy weekend with some friends going through a few bottles. We started with the nice invigorating Riesling from Figgins. Not like the 2020 however. we paired it with some different light cheeses like Brie, Muenster cheese, an apricot flavored cheese and a garlic flavored curd cheese. They all brought different flavors out of the wine. Fun experiment. Interestingly, one of the bottles was carbonated 🤔, the yeast must have still been active. — 4 years ago

Bass Phillip

Premium Gippsland Pinot Noir 2010

Mid to pale crimson. The intensity on the palate belies its paleish colour - textbook Bass Phillip. Earthy compost heap, cherry, mushroom and beetroot aromas and flavours. Superb wine. A briefer note than usual - too busy enjoying the wine - the first of 6 in the cellar - the others to be enjoyed over the next 5 plus years. — 7 years ago

Fairchild Estate

G III Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Drank way too soon. This is a huge wine that will last for years. Drank at Morton’s Anaheim on Valentine’s Day. The place was busy but they always do a great job. Had with the tomahawk ribeye. — 7 years ago

Bedrock Wine Co.

Dolinsek Ranch Heritage Red Blend 2023

I heard Bill Murray on a podcast recently raving about the bramble-berry pie he had the night before, describing the many berries that went into making it so delicious. It’s a fitting description for the current release of Bedrock’s Dolinsek Heritage red too, which is loaded with a rainbow of berry flavors and all their sweetness and bright acidity captured in a bottle instead of a crust. There’s an added bonus of a long, peppery finish thanks to the 70+% Zin in the field blend and some firm, drying tannins that signal a great future ahead. — a year ago

Venge Vineyards

Signal Fire Calistoga Zinfandel

Very dark red color. Powerful earthy blackberry nose. Aromatic blackberry taste with a little leather and cedar. Smooth and slightly sweet. This is the 2017 - app currently bugged and won’t let me enter it. — 5 years ago

Love the varietal just not sure about this wine is the penultimate expression. Takes some time to open up but once flowered it’s nice. A bit fruity but not overly so which is a plus for me. Smooth with a nice finish. — 6 years ago

Envinate

Táganan Parcela Margalagua Red Blend 2017

In a newsletter I wrote: ‘Margalagua’ roughly translates to ‘Mother of Water’ and I think it is obvious that the Mother of Water is wine. This is a wine for all weather, the weather forever thirsty, you always in need. The grapes are a busy blend of Listan Negro, Listan Prieto, Baboso, Negramoll and Malvasia Negra. The vines are at least 100 years old and untrained like an old dog that can’t learn new tricks but aren’t his old tricks still so good? He can’t differentiate a formal paw shake and a casual high five but he knows raising a paw to yours results in a mouthful of flavour and you too can expect a mouthful of flavour from the Margalagua. Fermented in old 500 liter barrels with the whole grape clusters included, and then raised in neutral 500 liter French oak barrels for 11 months. A tantalizing mixture of pepper and stones, pungent aromatics, with wonderful deep umami notes, high-toned citrus, spice and flowers. Float in this current, dream in the stream. — 7 years ago
