Château de Candale

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

Cork shattered, had to decant it. Well aged to say the least. Over 20 years in the bottle. Blend of Merlot 80% and Cab Franc 20%. Still has excellent color. Just a little hint of rust on edge. Aroma is very interesting. Savory and kinda minty. Some horehound maybe. Hint of soy sauce too. It’s a crazy melange in the nose. Fruit too. Flavors are French with lots of bittersweet stuff. Full of cassis. Little espresso. Complexity in spades and dense flavors. This has aged into a beaut. A great Saint-Emillion. Kinda has it all going on. — 2 years ago

La Cinso Cinsault 2015

Brambly black fruit - fresh, crushed, juicy - with a big pinch of pepper. Add to this a bit of violets and some crushed rock - this is not a shy wine.
Poised & balanced on the palate with juicy acidity, fine tannins and a sense of place. Quite elegant, too.
Shows Cinsault stand-alone can make a really nice wine.

Bandol Mourvedre Blend 2006

This is a beaut. Perfume and earth. Garden soil and woodland scrubs and evergreen shrubbery. Slight floral undertone. Spicy, tobacco and leather. Medium bodied, highly tannic, deserves a decent decant for being 12 years old. God, I love Mourvèdre. — 7 years ago

La 50/50 Cotes du Brian Grenache Blend 2019

These wines are very good. Precision is wild. This shows some blueberry fruit, lily florals, chalk, some baking spice. Really exquisite. Salt and acid. — 4 years ago

Dark ruby color. A wine I haven’t had. Apparently a combo of Grenache and Cabernet. Strong strawberry nose. A nice palate of dark cherry strawberry tobacco. Complex long finish. — 4 years ago

Beaune Grèves 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Regal, powerful, polished beneath a rustic veneer. Reductive out of the gate, the next day revealing complex and subtle layers of sappy fruit and resinous herbs. Raspberry, Kirsch, licorice, cedar and smoke flavors pushed forward. The mid palate is lithe and graceful, finishing with a silken texture that shows deft restraint in a rather generous vintage. The power and richness of 2015 makes an overall impression but is not the dominant feature. And despite the imprint of slightly charred new oak flavors, the acidity and freshness of this 1er cru lift things up and prevent it from feeling weighty. Truly a tremendous Burgundy.
