Château Léoville Poyferré

Saint Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Medium deep ruby garnet with wide garnet rim . Open and classic on the nose with tobacco , grafite , herbal , mint , seaweed and some mixed summer fruits . On the palate this is quite fresh and slightly lean in style , quite rustic , bitty tannins and a herbal touch. Mixed summer fruits on the mid palate and a reasonable earthy tobacco tinged finish . Best drunk now and over the next few years on the basis of this bottle . — 5 months ago

Château Lascombes

Margaux Merlot Blend 2020

2020 vintage drunk in April 2024. Evolved to become more charcoal, dark chocolate, tobacco, pencil shavings. Grippy and young still, have a second bottle and will revisit in a decade +. — 2 years ago

Forja del Salnes

Lovely mineral notes, long finish! Bought in San Sebastián drunk at the Barber's in Wilmslow! — 4 years ago

Apothic

Apothic White Winemaker's Blend California White Blend

Still bitter but more of a fruity taste. Got significantly less drunk than I did with Apothic Red. — 6 years ago

Leconfield

Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Deep crimson. More berry characters than herbal. Trace of Vanillan Oak. Not typically Cabernet - no Bay Leaf, no Tomato Bush and very little Mint. That mint often an indicator that this Cab is from Coonawarra not Margaret River. Fine supple yet persistent tannins which means it can be drunk now or cellared for a further 15 years. Excellent QPR at only $25.95AUD. — 8 years ago

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Chardonnay 2011

Fuller and peachier than the Oregon wine with a little of that dried pear character which is a trademark of the Art Series. Obviously from a warmer Vineyard - riper and luscious. Judicious use of French Oak. I have drunk quite a few Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnays over the years and this is typical of the style showing a little more restraint than usual. This is not about which is the better Chardonnay as they are both very good (96 points for each). It is about style preference. I slightly prefer the Art Series. — 8 years ago

Château Lafleur

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

Beautiful wine that I have never tried before. Still very lively for being 31 years old with a strong tannic backbone. Drunk blind I was convinced this was a Barolo 🤦...didnt cover myself in glory with that guess! Served with steak, bernaise and french fries — 6 months ago

31 years and, I assume based on your guess , still strong tannin structure. Merlot continues to amaze and surprise.

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1999

Deep ruby , garnet thinner rim . Quite deep fruits again . Spicy fruit darker in profile than the 1998 . But in style quite similar to the 1998, not the austerity or classic profile of the 1995 or 1996. Redder lighter fruits again , touch of spice and tobacco. A bit more stuffing than the 1998 , bit more tannin noticeable, with good acidity . This is better balanced than the preceding wine , has more complexity with quite good length on the slightly saline tinged finish. Certainly aromatically the youngest wine in the tasting , this can be drunk now though will improve over the 5 years perhaps and last well a further 5-10. — 3 years ago

Maybach Family Vineyards

Materium Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

2018 Materium comes from the Weitz Vineyard in Oakville and is all Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in mostly new barrels. It's a very different wine than the Amoenus release and has more elegant, seamless aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, black raspberries, tobacco leaf, flowery incense, and sandalwood. Château Margaux-like in its elegance and complexity, this brilliant wine has loads of sweet fruit, flawless integration of its tannins and acidity, flawless balance, and just a heavenly overall profile that I wish every reader could taste. This extraordinary effort can be drunk today or cellared for 30 years or more. — 5 years ago

Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 2014

What a delight! Herbaceous with hints of manure at first, then giving way to sweet and sour cherries. Fine acidity, drunk too young. Lord it went down quick — 7 years ago

Bass Phillip

Crown Prince Gippsland Pinot Noir 2018

This is Bass Phillip’s entry level Cuvée of about 5 different Cuvées. Pale Ruby with cloudiness from BP’s policy of bottling unfiltered. Jujube confectionery notes with savoury cherry and forest floor. Light to medium weight palate, made to be drunk young. The fruit for this wine comes from the major part of the Leongatha vineyard (where the Estate, Premium and Reserve Pinots come from). Even though this is a different vintage to previous notes on Delectable for Crown Prince the tasting notes are similar. — 5 years ago
