Ridge Vineyards

Three Valleys Sonoma County Zinfandel Blend

Ridge Three Valleys 2023
Sonoma County, California, USA 🇺🇸

Overview
A classic Sonoma field blend composed of 71% Zinfandel, 16% Carignane, 9% Petite Sirah, 2% Mataro, and 2% Alicante Bouschet. Crafted in Ridge’s signature transparent style, this vintage leans toward a riper and more fruit-driven expression than many of the winery’s other bottlings.

Aromas & Flavors
Blackberry preserves, ripe plum, black cherry, and raspberry compote dominate, supported by touches of black pepper and baking spice.

Mouthfeel
Medium to full-bodied with polished tannins and a broad, generous texture. The fruit lingers across the palate with a warm, persistent finish.

Food Pairings
A natural companion for barbecue, smoked meats, burgers, and hearty pizza.

Verdict
While impeccably made, this is one of the few Ridge wines that didn’t quite resonate with my palate. It leans a bit too jammy and overripe for my preference, though lovers of rich, fruit-forward California reds will likely find plenty to enjoy.

Did You Know?
Ridge has long been one of California’s pioneers of ingredient transparency, listing the exact grape composition directly on the label.

🍷 Personal Pick
I truly love Ridge wines, but I’d still reach for Lytton Springs or Geyserville before this bottling. If bold, juicy Zinfandel blends are your style, however, this one could easily become a favorite.

Syrah 2017

Medium dark rubi robe, nose pf asian spices, blackcurrant and black fruits. Very fresh and medium bodied, no wood tannins, well done and very seriously drinkable. Good stuff and surprised on the upside. — 10 months ago

Finger Lakes Rkatsiteli 2021

The producer of this lovely wine likens this ancient Georgian variety to sauvignon blanc. While this did have similar aromas of grass and lemon pith, as well as tropical fruit notes on the palate, I found this to be softer, and less tangy, than sauv blanc. Almost tastes like sauv blanc blended with riesling! 100% Rkatsiteli. 9/15/22. — 4 years ago

Oregon Pinot Noir 2015

Impressive wine for $20! Grapes sourced from Oregon Valleys of Willamette, Umpqua and Rogue. Cool climates enable a longer growing season, giving an intense structure. Deep Ruby with loads of Berry fruit flavors & sweet spice. Ripe fruit, cranberry and cherry, with cinnamon spice, consistent quality. On the finish, vibrant acidity, great balance and a touch of earthiness with subtle tannins. Tasting Sample. — 7 years ago

Chateau Montelena

Napa & Alexander Valleys Zinfandel 1979

Definitely old color-wise. Brick-orange. Aroma is old bricks and books. Also has a citrus/orange vibe. Flavors are strange and hint funky. Plenty of acid. Still zippy. Complexity has stuck around. The basic background is excellent. A classic aged wine with the strange background of a classic. This has the ghost of Zin in it. Herbal minty side. Not really Zin of today, but strange and fun to try all these years later. A unique wine drinking experience. Held up in a strange and fun way. — 4 months ago

Auntsfield

Single Vineyard Southern Valleys Pinot Noir 2022

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Single Vineyard displays jalapeño, capsicum, pineapple candy and passionfruit aromas. The dense soils of the Auntsfield estate give the wine notable weight and texture. It is dry, clean and purposeful, with a lingering finish. Enjoy when young for its vigor. $20.00 (Rebecca Gibb, Vinous, May 2023) — 3 years ago

Kondoli Vineyards Marani Saperavi 2017

A quite nice wine from Georgia - relatively limited experience with these wines, but clearly a strong winemaking tradition. Nice and inky dark in the glass, with lots of dark berry fruit. Medium bodied with medium minus tannins and good acid on the finish. For the price - and with Georgian food in Brighton Beach - a nice wine for sure. — 7 years ago
