Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2009

Still strong beautiful flavors. Didn’t decant as we sometimes like to drink slowly and enjoy the many flavors and textures as it opens in the glass. Harlan at his finest! — a month ago

Jensen Vineyard Pinot Noir 1989

Delicate, a kiss of sweetness with an herbal note. Minerality, of the warm earth, a beauty and elegance, still very much alive. Texturally and structurally beautiful. For this vintage, he hit it out of the park! — 4 months ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1994

Somm David T
9.7

This 1994 wasn’t the highest scoring wine of the tasting, but it was the prettiest. The 1994 vintage didn’t get the accolades of say 1997 and 2007, but in my mind and many others, 1994 was a very special vintage.

I have to thank Bob Levy and Don Weaver for bringing their very best wines to this tasting. Quite often, you will attend these tastings, and they will bring a couple nice vintages, and a number of off vintages. All but one of these 6 didn’t get an RP 💯 rating. So hats off to them for really bringing it!

The nose showed me beautiful perfumed fruits that were at the center of it a very dark core of currants, blackberries, black, raspberries, dark cherries, both plums baked strawberries with hints of Mulberry. The best, layered baking spices I can remember, black, licorice, dark, chocolate, red, and dark flowers, roses, and violets.

Glorious fruits and well resolved tenants were the theme in this wine. Black raspberries, dark cherries, ripe strawberries, and sweet cherries. Soft, dry soils, light and softly expressed dark spices, mid berry cola, black licorice, soft, gentle, tobacco’s, used leather, caramel, both dark and milk chocolates, limestone, dry river stone, dry, crushed rocks, excellent acidity, gentle tension, and structure, well balanced with an elegant two-minute finish that lands evenly on fruit on earth.

If there is one thing I learned tasting 6 Harlan’s is Bob Levy is one of the very best, if not thee best at managing Cabernet/Bordeaux blend tannins.

It was a special experience. I talked w/ a number of long time family of Harlan properties employees at Pebble Beach Food & Wine last weekend who said they haven’t even been in the same room with Don & Bob. Great experience…good representation of three decades of Harlan.

Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir 1999

Earthy, wild/native California herbs, touch of iron, beautiful, sense of the earth, stunning, salinity and depth and richness and complexity. Texturally beautiful, long, so complete, great balance. So good!! — 4 months ago

The wine opened up quite a bit after decanting for an hour or so. Great tawny color, notes of sour cherry and raisins, long aftertaste. Will integrated tannins. An awesome bottle! — 7 months ago

Oakville Red Blend 2020

Somm David T
9.4

While very good, this one needs another 8 plus yrs.

Soft subtle nose. Dark cassis, blackberries, both plums, powdery, soft earth tones, moist clay, dark, chocolate, dry herbs & brilliant floral’s.

Soft, round body. Blackberries, black raspberries, plums, very dark cherries, it’s elegant, smooth, very soft tannins, dark chocolate, soft but pointed spice, volcanics, dry stems, violets, lavender, dark
florals, brilliant acidity, elegant with soft tension, great length with a 90 second finish that lands on minerals and beautiful spice.

If there is one thing I learned tasting 6 Harlan’s is Bob Levy is one of the very best, if not thee best at managing Cabernet/Bordeaux blend tannins.

The Maiden Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend 2007

Opened just prior to dinner. The 2007 pours a dark ruby/garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining and loads of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of BBQ Lay’s potato chips (fight me), prunes, dried brambles, leather, organic earth and mixed spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium acid. It doesn’t taste like BBQ Lay’s but the fruit is definitely more of the dried/desiccated side. The finish is medium. Drink now. — 3 months ago

Certainly provenance can play apart or it could be overblown for some palates. It is normally a big wine but 07 was a grand Napa vintage and should show some nice evolution by now. It is an RP 💯. So, somewhat surprising. The tasting I am doing in April all the vintages except the 94 are 💯.pointers. The 1994 recieved a 98. We’ll see.🤞

I should say the 07 Estate received a 💯, not The Maiden.

@Somm David T I’ve had my fair share of big Cabernets but this just didn’t impress me. It was good, just not great. I didn’t expect more, I just wasn’t that taken by it. Again, might have been related to provenance but without an obvious flaw and considering the style of the wine, it might also just be how the wine is showing these days.

Penultimate

Napa Valley Red Blend 2013

+1 hour decant(decent chunky sediment). A splendid dark garnet color with little bricking. On the nose: Seductive notes of perfumed red fruit, dark chocolate, sandalwood, herbaceous, menthol, stewed meat. Taste: opulent, layered, silky wine with blackberry, chocolate espresso, dark plum, graphite, spice, and a licorice black tea slightly astringent long finish. 2nd wine for Harlan Promontory. — 7 months ago
