Not a lot of Nebbiolo grown in the US, AFAIK. Hawley gets it right. — 8 months ago
Hawley never disappoints, even with a wine that’s not a favorite of mine. One this good could change that. — 2 years ago
Russian River Valley. Alegria Vineyard. Decent Cab Franc, but not as good as we find in the Finger Lakes and Southern Ontario. — 2 years ago
In the right hands, Zinfandel makes a beautiful rosé. Hawley has the right hands. — 3 years ago
This took some time to open up. Kind of unyielding on the nose and bitter in the mouth on day 1. But on day 2, there’s classic, musky, tropical fruit and stony minerality, along with a meadow flowers note. On the palate, there’s a lot of dry extract here, imparting a phenolic bitterness initially, that gives way in the finish to more fruity notes. Bone dry, and the alcohol is showing a little in the finish as well. But lots of character in a somewhat gangly format. Thank to my brother for the gift! — 5 years ago

Hawley Winery Old Vine Zinfandel 2016, Mendocino County, California
Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.
Medium plus in body with medium acidity.
Dry on the palate with nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel.
Showing sweet cherries, blueberries, raspberries, light oak, licorice, cola, chocolates, coffee, spices, light mildew and black pepper.
Medium length on the finish with soft tannins and bitter herbs.
This 8 year old Zinfandel from Mendocino County is still drinking nicely, although on its way out.
The high alcohol is nicely integrated by now. Showing some mildew notes at this point.
Good by itself as a sipping wine.
14.8% alcohol by volume.
90 points.
$50 (current vintage). — 2 years ago
