Condrieu. 2018 vintage. Viognier partly fermented and aged in egg-shaped cement vats.Flowers and exotic fruit (ripe pineapple, passion fruit). Rich ripe fruit with very good acidity and the typical Condrieu bitter structure. Long finish with retronasal exotic fruit, almonds and an intriguing minerality. This producer has been batting 1000 recently. Nose is beautiful butterscotch and birthday cake. Plus paw paw and orange creamsicle, palate has fabulous acid and some nice minerals, also very long. Did not disappoint - smooth, concentrated fruits, with a hint of earthy, charcoal, tobacco.

2012 vintage. Old vine Syrah ( 60+ years) on granite soils on very steep slopes. Much more intense and mineral compared to the 2012 Thalabert tasted alongside ( as reflected in the higher price tag). 2013 vintage. The second wine of La Chapelle, that is now named " Maison Bleue", but an excellent wine in its own right. At 9 years old this is absolutely gorgeous with an expressive nose of blackberries, wild flowers, pepper and leather, enhanced by a subtle smokiness. In the mouth it combines power with elegance, with pure fruit, subtle spices, silky tannins and great length. Terrific value if the mythical La Chappelle doesn't fit your budget.
