Very nice! A little funky, but good depth. Melons, butter, honeysuckle, and steel dominate. Big wine! — 25 days ago

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Circa J.L. Chave Sélection Saint-Joseph Marsanne Roussanne 2021

2024 enjoyed 5/2026. tasted in lineup of Rhône Blanc, mostly rich and oily. this would have shown better if we started with this. I really like, I prefer the more mineral style -which is this. subtle white flowers, honeydew, under ripe peach. lemon curd showing after opening. — 4 months ago

Vignobles Mayard

La Crau de ma Mère Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2003

Bought this as a birthday wine and paired it with some Chinese food lamb and eggplant. It’s impressive how much energy and life is still in this, with the color still a clear deep rose, with the bricking amber colors only showing under sharp lighting on the medium body. The nose is like meaty blueberries and mashed strawberries, maybe even a little plum, with musty bookcase and black olive notes with maybe a hint of blood orange as well. It blends perfectly with food, with deep ripe jammy blueberries and black berries, more black olives, a hint of tar, driftwood, barbecue burnt ends and tannin that’s still very much gripping at the end of the palate. The flavor lingers for a looong time, with hints of celery salt and a kind of inky black saucy flavor, like a dark soy sauce but more vinegary towards the end. Damn fine wine. — 13 days ago

Trimbach

Sélection de Vieilles Vignes Alsace Riesling 2017

Still drinking young, but coming around. The definition of a chiseled, bone dry Alsace Riesling. Minerally, fresh nose. Citrusy. Intense and minerally in the mouth. Mouth-stinging acids. Long. So good. — 2 months ago

Domaine Coche-Dury (J.F. Coche Dury)

Domaine & Sélection Meursault Chardonnay 2016

Of course way too young and very different from the dad’s style, a lot less toasting, little or no reduction. Still beautiful minerality but for me no longer worth the JF Coche Dury prices. — 7 years ago

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

J.L. Chave Sélection Farconnet Hermitage Syrah 2022

2022. Full bodied to cut the richness of a beautiful piece of Colorado lamb saddle, but it did not fight with the spiciness of the Merguez sausage stuffed squash blossom, shishitos, or the harissa negra sauce. At the Boiler Room. — a month ago

@Brian Hearty, I haven’t purchased Chave in years — is this a Cuvee from purchased fruit?

This was the first time I’ve had this wine and didn’t know it was included in the dinner until getting there. The fruit for J.L. Chave Sélection Hermitage "Farconnet" is sourced from purchased grapes grown in three distinct parcels on the historic Hermitage hill: Diognières (alluvial pebbles and spice), Péleat (sand and limestone for finesse), and Greffieux (glacial river stones for structure).

After a few days! That is pretty cool that it lasts that long.

@Manny Abascal As long as you pour carefully and get a stopper in the bottles quickly I’ve found the best champagne usually lasts and improves for days or even weeks in the fridge! I sometimes use it as a proxy for storage potential similar to other wines.

Interesting! I am going to try that. I usually put a stopper in at the end of the evening after it has been sitting out a while. A few still do ok but most don’t. I’m moving to your method. Thanks for the tip!
