Daumas Gassac

Mas de Daumas Gassac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

What a wine! The nose is so complex with blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry, dark cherries, tar, oak, mushrooms, autumn damp forest soil, tobacco, cigar box... this is great. The palate is superb! Big, broad and long, with some width, some matter on the sides, some nice black and red berries all along, a touch of oak, a silky mouthfeel that rolls on the tongue, integrated tannins that caress and hug in the rear, and a very long finish with the same berries, a subtle drying layer, some oaky touches, a savoury note and eventually some bitterness that pops up in the very end. This is 16 year-old and kicking. This is grand !
I should add that I had a glass of this using my coravin a few months back and the wine wasn't showing as well as it does now.

Great intel on the coravin, sometimes after the second glass from weeks apart the wine climbs to a better stage (if winemaking precision is at its finest). Otherwise, even with the microscopical puncture the wine becomes volatile and gone!

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1995

Slightly deeper ruby garnet , narrower rim . Deeper and younger , touch of wood smoke then quite ripe black fruits , rounder with better definition on the nose than the 1994 . More degraded cassis and grafite noticeable than the wine before, tobacco , touch of seashell , marine influence comes though . On the palate the fruit fills out better than the 1994, quite dark and serious , grafite , tobacco and cedar , however the tannin is less rustic and better integrated . Nice balancing acidity. This has quite good length and is showing well now though could age a little longer. Probably is best drunk over the next few years — 3 years ago

La Folle Noire d'Ambat Fronton Negrette 2019

As always a very biaised review of this one. This is great and this wine feels like it's family. Violet, blackberry, spice and an irony note on the nose. The palate is well balanced with blackberry notes, a good width, a soft and almost sweet mouthfeel, a powerful midpalate with a bit of tannins leaving a layer of complexity before a fruit forward finish that lasts for a while. So good! — 5 years ago

Anthill Farms

Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Fruit for this Pinot comes from two of the coolest, most coastal parts of this appellation, linked by the influence of the Pacific’s cool marine air, which delays ripening. Ruby with berry fruit, citrus and floral spice. On the palate, strawberry and cherry, tangy, with cedar notes and earthy tones. Bright acidity, soft expressive tannins, long finish ending with tobacco and woody spice. Very nice, drink now & over next 5 years. — 6 years ago

La Source Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil Cabernet Franc 2022

Opened yesterday, drank over 2 days.
The nose is very fruity and intense with dark cherry touches, earthy notes, some raspberry and blackberry scents too. I could even smell some peony notes too. This is really inviting. The palate is wide and long and quite complex. A good acid drive, some dark cherry notes all along, some very soft and easy going mouthfeel that is changing in mid palate with a great tannic wall, which adds a layer of dust over an otherwise quite juicy and fruity finish. In the back-end though, there is a tiny savoury note that pops along with a subtle bitterness. This is really my kind of cab franc. Really good stuff!

Fantastically crisp. Works well with the Caribbean spices at this excellent restaurant. The wine has notes of rhubarb and citrus, with aftertaste that lingers. Floral to the nose. — 4 years ago

Law Estate Wines

Beguiling by Law Grenache - Syrah Blend

Even in the Rhone Valley, Rhone blends don’t get any better than this. Heck, very few California wines get better than this! Sitting on a thousand foot deep (at least!) layer cake of limestone and Miocene sea sediments, the Law vineyards produce some of the most deliciously calcaire wines I’ve ever tasted. Absolute bliss to drink.

On the nose: oregano, mint, and 300-year-old books bound in old leather on the nose. Thick cassis fruit and a hint of eucalyptus on the front. Fruity but not jammy! After the foretaste, this wine is held together with soft limestone tannins. The mid-palate is full of mineral high notes underlaid by fifty-million years of plate tectonics. You’re drinking geologic history here as selectively interpreted by Syrah and Grenache grapes! It’s as if you’re tasting what the grape roots are tasting! Not a particularly long finish, but all the same it’s extremely satisfying. Again with the mineral high notes plus eucalyptus, but they’re all balanced by a cool minty soothingness at the back of the throat. Absolutely lovely!

Really ripe, pushing the border of what I like, but it stays on the right side of it. It has enough earthiness and acidity to provide balance. — 6 years ago
