864 Winery Block Oakridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Ming L
9.4

Visited the winery several years back. As good as their PN and Chard are, this is the bottle I brought home.

Deep crimson with a lifted bouquet of blackcurrant, red cherry, graphite, and cedar. Medium body with great texture, the depth and the purity of the fruits on the palate is really impressive. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity drive a long, elegant finish. Masterful in precision, structure, and refinement.

Yarra Valley Cabernet is fabulous. Check out Mount Mary, Yeringberg and Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 when you get a chance.

Thanks @Bob McDonald ! I don’t think they have broad distribution in the U.S., but will definitely on the lookout.

864 Charlie's Block Chardonnay 2011

Nothing to add to my previous notes. A well made Chardonnay from Chardonnay specialist, David Bicknell. Made in the leaner style. Travelling well at 10 years. — 5 years ago

Juicy nose, lacking fruit and oak slightly pointy today. Not the best showing of a good Syrah. — 6 years ago

Giant Steps

Lusatia Park Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

Lusatia Park is not a Cuvée used every year by Giant Steps. Oakridge make a good Chardonnay from there. This Pinot had a tawny edge to the mid Ruby Red in colour. Sweet red cherry and red fruits in general with whole bunch influence and great persistence of flavour. — 3 years ago

Local Vineyard Series Barkala Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay 2015

Smoky, savoury, and spicy nose, some oak and a leesy sulphidic note. On the palate mainly citrus but a little riper verging on to stone fruit. One of David Bicknell’s lesser Cuvées which I thought would be lean but not so. Coming together at 6 years of age. Drinking really well from one of Australia’s best Chardonnay exponents. — 5 years ago

Block 1 Hazeldene Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018

Very nice proper Yarra pinot. Everything in its place. Red fruit dominates but there is some savoury funk and tannin to give interest and structure. Buy again — 6 years ago

Tasted blind beside the Oakridge willowlake.
Pinot Noir is a mind blowingly versatile grape.

A. Rodda

Willow Lake Vineyard Chardonnay 2018

A little flinty sulphidic note amongst the ripe grapefruit on the nose. From the well performed Willowlake Vineyard where other producers like Giant Steps and Oakridge have made excellent Chardonnay. This Rodda Chardonnay is also excellent with great QPR at only $35. Great intensity with white stone fruit and lively crisp acid. Rodda makes at least 2 other Chardonnay Cuvées at the same price, that should be annual purchases. Had my 2nd bottle taken to Lindsay McNaught’s 70th at Gips on Sunday 21st September 2025. Consistent notes. — 2 years ago

Local Vineyard Series Hazeldene Vineyard Chardonnay 2016

Treads the middle path between citrus and stone fruit - more lighter than full bodied. From one of Australia’s Premier exponents of Chardonnay in David Bicknell. No malolactic. Opened another bottle 27 weeks later on 16th April 2020 with similar notes. Very well made and great drinking for the price. — 7 years ago
