On the Lawn at Tanglewood this afternoon with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra (the overly talented youth!). Our conductor Andris Nelsons is leading IVES (Three Places in New England, Orchestral Set No. 1), BEETHOVEN (Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, Opus 37) and STRAUSS (Also sprach Zarathustra, Opus 30...aka 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick❤️).

One of our local treasures, Emanuel Ax on piano for the Beethoven Concerto!

Oikonomoy Dry White 2014

A nice white wine with some juicy citrus flavors, but a let-down after tasting Oikonomoy’s Odyssey. I likely would have liked this wine better if I had it first. Not orange like Odyssey but some similar but less pronounced flavors., and a citrus nose. — 3 years ago

Tasmania Shiraz 2019

Continuing on with my Tasmanian Odyssey - this time a cool climate Shiraz. Lovely and semi rich with pepper and spice and only medium weight, but with a plummy note - my style of Shiraz. Loved it. Not dissimilar to a Saint Joseph. — 4 years ago

Pleasantly surprised. Wasn’t sure what to expect as this came in the mystery case but drank like a balanced earthy Pinot. Would try this again depending on price. — 5 years ago

The Odyssey Red Rhone Blend 2018

9.2

Based on the label, the fruits for the ‘18 is not from Napa but Sierra Foothills, an AVA that I’m not familiar with. And I’m quite impressed.
A Southern Rhone blend that really highlights the bright berry fruits and the elegance of Grenache. Medium body with silky palate. It’s a great contrast to the big bold GSM blends often associated with other California AVAs.

Sierra Foothills is an under-the-radar source for Rhone varietals and Zins. Visited last summer. Many great wines.

Odyssey Okanagan Valley Cabernet Franc 2019

Dark crimson Cabernet Franc, nose of smoky oak, fruit cake with a flavourful palate reminiscent of blackberries and black currants and stewed plum. Super dry finish. Chef chose to pair it with Bison sirloin, steak frites. — 3 years ago

Okanagan Valley Pinot Gris 2020

Odyssey blend. Dark end of a pale gold hue with nice depth of colour in the glass. Notes of ripe pear and maybe a hint of peach or even a more citrus-y tropical fruit in the mix. Maybe a hint of green herbs there as well. Wine is sweet with a very smooth mouthfeel, a little acidity to keep things interesting. Tastes like it smells. All in all, a very tasty glass. — 5 years ago

Tsantali

Kanenas Mavroudi Syrah 2015

Vintage 2015 / Wednesday Meatballsday (4) / why does someone call his wine ‘No one’ ? It is asking for troubles... you might presume. It has to do with Odyssey, when he was trapped by the Cyclops Polyphemus in his cave, he offered the most precious wine and the Cyclops asked for its name. Kanenas means No one. Enfin... good story, but how does it taste? The colour is half transparant, a ruby rim. It seems a very easy wine, comforting, quaffable, hap sap. But drinking with care one discovers a very nice nose, smell of raspberries, quite frivolous. Hints of spices. Made from local grape Mavroudi and Syrah. Paired very well with meatballs, broccoli and baked potatoes. Greece is really interesting. — 7 years ago

From my favorite winery in Central coast, this ‘16 Southern Rhone blend with 78% Grenache is rich, dark, and brooding. Tremendous complexity. So different than the ‘18 Miner Odyssey.

Ricardo Santos

La Madras Vineyard El Malbec 2010

M Y
9.7

Ah, the 2010 vintage of Ricardo Santos Malbec, a transcendental libation that beckons the soul into the labyrinthine depths of vinicultural exuberance. As I imbibed this elixir, my palate embarked on an odyssey through an enigmatic symphony of hedonistic flavors. The terroir speaks with the eloquence of a thousand poets, invoking an avant-garde pas de deux between dark fruit and enigmatic earthiness.

The tannins, oh, the tannins! Like philosophers engaged in a Socratic dialogue with one's senses, they debate their existence before yielding to a seductive silkiness that borders on a Vinous epiphany. Its finish lingers, not unlike the sermons of a zealous street preacher, echoing in the inner sanctum of one's mind.

In conclusion, Ricardo Santos' 2010 Malbec is a vinous riddle wrapped in an enigmatic enigma, destined to provoke laughter, tears, and existential contemplation. A masterpiece of humorous absurdity in a glass!
