Clos des Goisses Eau de Vie Champagne Blend

Poured as a night cap. Philipponnat’s Eau-de-Vie de Marc de Champagne “Clos des Goisses” (say that five times fast!) pours almost colorless with high viscosity. There are powerful notes of fresh Bosque pear and exotic spices with a great body and long finish. Bangin’! — 7 months ago

NV. Gorgeous coloring. Hints of frontal palate dirtiness that dissipate quickly in the mouth as it transitions to florals and that Philipponnat-styled acidity. Such a great table-setter. 10.17.25. — 8 months ago

Champagne Spatlese and you’d never know. 30 grams of dosage! Nose is highly complex and aromatic with stunning toastiness. Some ripe peaches and citrus as well. Really captivating nose. Also an intriguing earthy scent. Palate has some sweetness but man is this masterful for the style. Gorgeous fruit, kiss of sweetness and awesome purity. Red cherries, nice acids, nice density. Not for everyone but I love it. Really energetic, linear and delineated. — 5 years ago

Cuvée "1522" Extra Brut Grand Cru Champagne Blend

With a heavy and firm body the champagne signals clearly its Pinot heavy blend. Elegant though towards the end the heaviness to me got in the way of full appreciation. Need to stick to Moncuit, Gimmonet, and with a budget Salon! — 6 years ago

Solid cuvée. Their entry level.

A bit sweet at 8g but Extra Brut in 375’s a little harder to come by. 65% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 3% Pinot Meunier. Base vintage 2020. Disgorged June 2024.

The mouth entry glides with rich, ripe; green apple, pineapple, white stone fruit, cherries, lemon pulp to meringue, lime zest, kiwi, tropical melons. Vanilla, caramel, cream, some yeast notes, toast, slivered almonds, crisp volcanic minerals with limestone, white spice that plunges into the palate with some heat, dry herb notes, chalk in bits & powder, saline, sea fossils, yellow flowers, white spring flower bouquet, crisp acidity with nice balance and a 90 second finish that long sets on spice & minerals.

In all my many travels to world wine regions during or just post harvest, the Clos De Goisses Pinot Noir fruit was absolutely the best…everything else, a fairly distance second. I ate 2-3 clusters.

Photos of: my visit to Philipponnat, 10/23. The Clos Des Goisses vineyard that strangely grows over their facility, the view of the Cote de Blancs from the Clos Des Goisses vineyard & entrance to their cellar.

2008 doesn’t disappoint. My other bottles will lay down for another 5 years plus.

It is fresh, lush, rich with great o2. The flavors burst onto the palate. Bruised apple, Bosc pear, ginger ale to ginger, cream soda, cream, lemon, lime, orange citrus, biscuit, yeasty, limestone, chalk, saline, baguette crust, yellow & white florals, the acidity is outstanding. The finish is well balanced, structured, big structure and lasts two-minutes.

Pictures of my October visit Philipponnat. Pano from their Clos de Goisses of the beautiful Cote de Blancs, upward look at their Clos de Goisses, Clos de Goisses signage as you walk up to that vineyard and their cellar.

Really good w/ Himalaya Pink Salt Popcorn!!!

Philipponnat Champagne Blanc de Noirs 2019

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2019 pours a pale straw color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of fresh strawberry, raspberry, lemon curd, and almonds with chalk and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and mineral laden. There’s some solid energy and verve. Drink now through 2039. Disgorged December 2024. 29911 bottles produced. — 3 months ago

Marc Hébrart

Brut 1er Cru Rosé Champagne Blend

The Hébrart domaine is located right on the Marne, in the village of Aÿ, catty-corner to Philipponnat. Their 1er cru Rosé, NV is a 60/40 mix of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, aged in INOX (with a small portion of the PN added as vin rouge aged in barrique). What’s most important, is that it’s delicious.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The wine pours a very pretty pink color with a persistent mousse. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe strawberry, raspberry, lemon, pink flowers, marzipan and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ with a lovely, creamy texture. Serious enough for the nerds; seriously gluggable for the revelers. Disgorged April of 2023. Drink now.

Young but still beautiful. Better things with aging.

This rides the fence of having reductive & oxidative characteristics.

Bruised apple & pear, some apple cider, kumquats, some pineapple, tart lemon & lime zest, ginger ale, white spice-ginger that burros in the tongue w/ some heat, cream, baguette crust, limestone crumbles, saline, sea fossils, slightly bitty chalkiness, dry volcanic minerals, white flowers with greens, excellent acidity, well balanced & tensioned, polished elegant finish that lasts 90 seconds.

Photos of my October 2023 visit to Philipponnat. Clos Des Goisses which grows over the top of their facility and the view of the Cote de Blancs from the Clos Des Goisses vineyard. The best ripe and in this case unpicked vineyard fruit I’ve had was on that day in Clos Des Goisses. It wasn’t ripe when they harvested but it was perfect on the day of my visit. I would only add that I have tasted ripe vineyard fruit from all over the world. That’s how great it was!!!
