Forlorn Hope

Queen of the Sierra Rorick Heritage Vineyard Riesling Blend 2019

Strange wine. Very little fruit here, but a crazy amount of botanical herbs that reminds me of Chartreuse, jasmine, chamomile, slate, leafy greens, and maybe some spearmint. Not delicious but fascinating none the less. This will get someone out of their comfort zone real quick! — 5 years ago

Sea Queen Edna Valley Albariño 2020

Really impressed with this wine. This area of California’s landscape and proximity to the Pacific mimics that of Albariño’s home, Rias Biaxas. Salty, tropical, and mineral with good weight and balance. — 5 years ago

Iruai

May Queen Chardonnay Savagnin

Cloudy but vibrant lemon-gold hue, with intense and intriguing notes of brûléed pineapple, marzipan, baked yellow apple, lemon custard, crème puff, lily of the valley, geranium, yellow peach, mirabelle plum, and sourdough.

Ultra-fine, creamy mousse and tart, with searing acidity to balance the rich texture. Like biting into the perfect not-quite-ripe yellow plum. Some very pleasant autolytic character.

Very likely my favorite California sparkling wine I’ve ever tasted.

Day Wines

Queen D Applegate Valley White Blend 2016

32/23/23/22 blend of Vermentino, Marsanne, Rousanne and Grenache Blanc. Pale white, excellent clarity. Floral and stone fruit notes in nose. Lemon, lime, tangerine pith and stone fruit flavors, lime and mineral in finish, almost dry, robust level of acidity with a variety of acids - tartaric, citric, malic. Slight carbonation in the mouth - tactile-wise, not visually. Good food wine but Vermentino character makes it suitable as an aperitif. Grenache Blanc gives it a moderate skin astringency on finish along with an herbal (dill) and slight white pepper aftertaste. Overnight, a ripe black plum skin flavor emerges in the finish, accompanied by a tart, slightly chalky flavor, maybe from lees contact. Complex flavor profile; the varietal blend and proportions largely work here. Fun wine but still easy to drink despite the apparent complexity of its components. Creative but successful wine craft overall. — 7 years ago

Bryant Family Vineyard

Bettina Proprietary Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1595

Celebration to Queen and the late Freddie Mercury at The Grill on the Ally in San Jose Concert tomorrow night. The Bryant Family Cabernet blend is something to celebrate with. On the nose snaps with a dark blackberry and cherry fruit and lingers of veggie, spice and eucalyptus. Taste is full body with a rich fill of black cherry and plum and finishing with a chocolate gravel and vanilla taste. — 7 years ago

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2021

Clear, deep ruby colour. Clean, pronounced red fruits and pepper on the nose. Dry, high acidity and tannins, with ripe plum, red cherries and heaps of pepper! Full-bodied with a very long finish. Very good quality.

Great accompaniment to the beautifully cooked, glazed fillet.

Domaine Leroy

Bourgogne Chardonnay 2015

Somm David T
9.2

The nose reveals, mashed, sour, candied/liqueured, meyer lemon, very ripe, pineapple, golden apple, lime skin, & green apple w/ almost no skin, fresh, herbal qualities, honey, beeswax, vanillin, warm caramel, limestone minerals, soft chalkiness, wet stone with yellow lilies and florals and mixed greens.

The body is; round, rich, bold, thick & waxy. It is gorgeous over the palate. Mashed, sour, candied/liqueured, meyer lemon, grapefruit pulp, dry & candied pineapple, golden apple, key lime, stone fruit, tangerine & green apple w/ almost no skin, fresh, herbal qualities, honey, beeswax, vanillin, warm caramel, toffee, marmalade, white spice, limestone minerals, soft chalkiness, wet stone, dusty dry rocks, saline notes with yellow lilies, white florals & mixed greens. The acidity is, beautifully, round & phat. The rich, ruby, heather honied, well balanced/polished finish delicious & lingers well.

Photos of; two aspect views of Domaine Leroy & Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy (The Queen of Burgundy) in her precious vineyards. She all about bio-dynamic, lower yields, prunes by hand and sings to her vines. And, who could argue her success.
