last had this AUG 24 and it's still peaking, lil darker, bit of an oxidized quality to nose & palate, but still dynamic & complex, Rubenesque - so utterly enjoyable — a month ago

Colli Orientali del Friuli Ronco Basso Chardonnay 2020

Popped and poured. The 2020 Chardonnay “Ronco Basso” is quite compelling. I found that the fruit presented more round on the nose than it is on the palate, which showed a bright mix of tropical and citrus fruits with really lovely acid and fantastic minerality. The finish was long and full of energy. One of the more exciting Chardonnays I’ve had in a while. Drink now but will drink well for at least 10 years. — 3 years ago

Friuli Colli Orientali Schioppettino 2019

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2019 Schioppettino is remarkably pretty and floral, with violets and roses complementing its wild red berries and hints of smoke. This is soft-textured and lifted in feel, yet also packed full of fleshy raspberry fruit, as exotic spices build within. It leaves a tinge of sour citrus while finishing lightly structured and with a staining like liquid lavender. Lovers of Schioppettino will fall head over heels for the 2019. Sol Chardonnay 2024

Earthy, capri lemon, mineral, and fennel in the bouquet.

Good acid profile (moderate to high), granite / chalky / earthy / peaty unctuousness going on.

Rocky/gravelly chew. Less green and more stony.

Sol Sauvignon 2020

2022/6/8-10 with scallop crudo, homemade fresh tagliolini al Portonat, frico, etc. A nice mix of more “typical”, bright Sauvignon Blanc citrus and herbs with richer, stone fruit notes. Strong minerality, sneaky richness and plenty of acidity ensure a strong structure, and subtle depth keeps one coming back. — 4 years ago

“Buri Bellaria” Friuli Colli Orientali Friulano 2023

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of 90 minutes. The 2023 “Buri Bellaria” Friulano pours a deep straw color with medium+ viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe orchard and some tropical fruit: peach cup, pear, ripe pineapple, Meyer lemon, and rocky, inorganic earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the texture is silky. Alcohol is medium+. A distinctive wine; full of beauty. Drink now through 2033. — 3 months ago

Ronco delle Mele Collio Sauvignon

Great wine even though it didn’t hold up to my memories of former vintages, maybe because it’s a rare wine in its class that’s both excellent but drinks better young. It shed its primary character and left behind some ginger, vegetal tomato leaf and a silky texture with a long finish, driven by very prominent phenolic bitterness. Drinks like an austere high-quality white Bordeaux without the oak, but I miss the vibrant fruitiness and stronger Italian quality I get in its youth — 6 months ago

Vigna Ronco Al Maso Ghemme Nebbiolo 2017

Some of us, being Nebbiolo supplicants, love Ghemme for its paradoxical meaty, bloody, yet light qualities. This has it in spades, on the edge of cherry cough syrup but never quite there. The woods, especially on the nose. This wine would benefit from a large glass.
It’s a bit of a sneaky, under the radar winery, hopefully for a bit still.
Lots of cherries, loam, dirt, blood, stoniness. Delicious. A ‘17 feels just about right.

Serena Palazzolo e Figli Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc Serena Palazzolo e Figli is very easy to like. Both spicy and intense, with smoky crushed stone giving way to musky peach and hints of confectionery spice. This washes across the palate, with round yet juicy textures delivering ripe orchard fruits and hints of candied lime. Its stimulating minerality and sour citrus add poise, yet not so much to slow its momentum, as the 2020 finishes long and wickedly fresh. This would make a great gateway wine for lovers of Sauvignon looking to explore Friuli. The Serena Palazzolo e Figli is a blend of fruit from throughout the Ronco del Gnemiz vineyards. Its minerality and sour citrus character keep the experience engaging to say the least. (Eric Guido, Vinous, April 2022)
