2008 Alvarinho from Portugal. Absolutely delicious. Nose: honey, nectarine. Taste:honeycomb, grapefruit, peach. Definitely one of my favorite whites I’ve ever had. Really cool how it’s such an aged white. Has a complex rich yellow color. — 6 months ago
Good. Definitely can do another bottle. — 3 years ago
It’s incredible, this wine doesn’t look like it’s aged a day since I first tried it 9 years ago at the winery. A deep purple color in the glass that barely fades at the rim. The nose is soft and pure brunello, dusty earthy notes of sour cherry, anise sand a touch of dried porcini. The palate shows wonderful structure and acidity for 15 years of age. Rich fruit notes with notes of dark earth lead to dusty, drying tannins. The finish seems everlasting with acidity dancing on the tongue along with a hint of spice. I really do wonder how far this would have gone. Wonderful wine! — 4 years ago
Bouchard’s Blanc de Noirs Val Vilaine is especially strong in 2017 and also a fabulous introduction to this range of magnificent Champagnes. Beautifully resonant and inviting, the 2017 is so gorgeous. Pear, baked apple, dried flowers, mint and spice all build as the 2017 opens up in the glass. More than anything else, the 2017 impresses with its poise and raciness. The slightly reductive character found in some previous releases is not present in the 2017, and that really lets the purity of the fruit shine through. Bouchard does not push this site to the degree he does most of his other vineyards, so the Val Vilaine doesn’t quite offer the complexity of the top wines here, but words really can’t do justice to just how delicious the 2017 is. Don’t miss it. No dosage. Disgorged: April, 2019. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, December 2019)

Beautiful, balanced, elegant. Salty, lemon, and not too floral. Creamy and long. — 8 days ago
Soft tree fruit aromas, mouthwatering, lemon zesty, salt aftertaste that lingers on the tongue.
My favorite from Albariño class! Perfect pairing with orange shrimp, rice, and summer veggies! — 2 months ago
Distinct grapefruit zest matched with savory, dried cherry notes. Lovely copper orange color & medium bodied. Very much a food rose- did well with a dish of Argentinian wild shrimp with chick peas, onions, lemon zest, garlic& butter etc. . A Tuscan maker I will remember-oh, and women vintners do it better. They just do… — 4 years ago

Bodegas As Laxas — Val do Sosego Godello
Rías Baixas, Galicia, Spain 🇪🇸
Overview
A fascinating 100% Godello from Rías Baixas, an appellation overwhelmingly associated with Albariño. That alone makes this an intriguing departure, but what really impresses is the combination of freshness, substance, and character—a different side of Atlantic Galicia in the glass.
Aromas & Flavors
Yellow apple, ripe pear, quince, lemon peel, and delicate stone fruit lead the profile, with subtle floral and mineral nuances underneath. Refreshing without relying on the overt tropical character often associated with many Rías Baixas whites.
Mouthfeel
Bone dry, energetic, and beautifully balanced, with lively acidity wrapped around a surprisingly substantial texture. There is real presence through the mid-palate and a clean, persistent finish that makes it dangerously easy to keep pouring.
Food Pairings
Grilled octopus, scallops, white fish, shrimp, seafood rice, roasted chicken, or simply good conservas. Its combination of acidity and texture makes this extremely versatile at the table.
Verdict
An impressive and decidedly different Galician white. Refreshing enough for casual drinking, yet the yellow-fruit profile, texture, and structure give it considerably more personality than a straightforward thirst-quencher.
Did You Know?
Godello is much more strongly associated with Galicia’s Valdeorras appellation, while Rías Baixas has built its international reputation around Albariño. That makes seeing “Godello” and “Rías Baixas” together on a label particularly unusual—and part of what makes this bottle so interesting.
🍷 Personal Pick
This one is soaring among my favorite Spanish whites. I love that it doesn’t follow the expected tropical-fruit script: yellow fruits, bone-dry freshness, balanced acidity, and a terrific mouthfeel give it its own identity. Deliciously, and dangerously good. — 2 days ago
