Caillez-Lemaire

Coteaux Champenois Blanc 2023

This is, quite obviously, Caillez-Lemair’s Coteaux-Champenois Blanc. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of lunch at La Briqueterie with Virginie Vanpoperinghe. This is a relatively new offering from Caillez-Lemaire and made in very small quantities. The 2023 pours a straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of yellow apple, pineapple, lemon curd, honeysuckle, and chalky/clay earth. On the palate the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium with lovely minerals. This was an excellent pairing with our lunch. Drink now through 2033. — 4 months ago

Very cool. Love to snag a still from that region whenever I see one but I rarely do see any!

@Tom Casagrande they make so little of it and what does get produced typically doesn’t leave France

Chateau Valandraud

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

2009 vintage. Opened with a Durand and decanted. Perfect fill and cork. Some sed but slightly less than expected. Throwing out color more purple than any royalty could ever dream of. Tasted after 15 minutes and 2.5 hours. Seductive, come hither nose and accompanying medium/medium-heavy curvaceous body. Took as much restraint as I could muster not to crush this instantly. Ridiculously excellent. Second impressions after 2.5 hours…wine had dropped the seductive pretensions and was downright dirty. Earth, mushrooms, chalk, tobacco all without the initial, devilish richness. Still didn’t suck. This was phenomenal and the Dickens Tale Of Two Cities “age of light, age of darkness.” Essential. 2.6.26. — 2 months ago

Coincidentally just picked one up. Glad I saw your review. I’ll crush before the epoch of incredulity.

@Paul K Pick another one up or at least have it in your sights. You’ll want to have backup available before committing to opening one.

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose and medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing red and black fruits with cedar, licorice, chocolates, coffee, peppercorn, earth and black tea.

Nice length on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This 10 year old Merlot from Saint Emilion still feels young. Drinking very nicely now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

This second wine is good right out of the bottle, and much better after a couple of hours of airtime.

Wine Spectator 91 points. Wine Advocate 92 points.

A nice sipping wine that will also pair nicely with food.

A blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 22 months in all new French oak barrels.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

91 points.

$50.

Got some teeth on it. Very pleasant fruit, red and blue. Chalky tannins. Inexpensive and just fine to drink now.
