Conti Costanti

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2013

Ming L
8.9

The nose shows classic BdM aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, steeped black tea, tobacco, and a whisper of balsamic. Yet on the palate its tart acidity overwhelmed, and the nimble structure is more inline with CC than a BdM.

Not bad, but I certainly expected much more.

I would have had the same expectation for the producer and year.

Tenuta Col d'Orcia

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2013

Medium garnet , quite a quite wide garnet rim . This is quite spiced on the nose with , some red cherries , spiced raspberries and sweet anise, liquorice, some notes dried herbal , black tea hints . On the palate this is medium bodied with quite high acidity , more spiced cherry , raspberry and herbal hints , with the sweet anise notes also . Not very long on the palate but quite well balanced . Spiced , sweet fruited profile, quite light in style for a Brunello. This is drinking well now and I wouldn’t leave it very much longer, no upside from here , enjoy over the next 3-4 years. Next day , showing a little more dried fruits and spice , anise , still hanging in there , but nothing to gain by keeping. — 5 months ago

Tenuta Il Poggione

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Second time trying this from the 2015 vintage, first enjoyed five years ago. This was my Christmas Day wine, when it’s always hard to really appreciate or concentrate on a wine what with everything else going on! I ordinarily go for familiar favourites from the Rhône, or aged Bordeaux. Anyway, this Brunello was still super macho, austere and in need of either more time in bottle or some very rustic, Tuscan food. Or both! — 3 months ago

Valdicava

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2009

Dark and murky ruby color with a slight garnet rim. Aromas of leather, ripe black cherry and a good deal of barnyard funk. Flavors of earth, coffee, mushrooms with a very slight amount of dried black cherry fruit. Finish is a bit bitter but the wine is still well balanced. Exceptionally tertiary with well softened tannins. Frankly, this wine was fine (if you can accept the lower fruit levels) but I was (it was not flawed) honestly expecting more from this highly regarded producer. — 5 months ago

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016

This producer is an underrated powerhouse. Always impressive. This is another excellent showing. Complex. Strong fruit. Power but with spice and earthy kick. Fantastic. I would give it a few more years. Should be even better. — 6 months ago

Il Marroneto

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2001

Opened a few hours prior to service and enjoyed with dinner over the course of a couple hours. The 2001 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing (still!) with notes of Morello cherry, raspberries, red flowers, oolong tea, leather, and dry earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. The Il Marroneto only gained power with time. Looking back on my notes, the last time I had the 2001 Classico was nearly ten years ago (and I had enjoyed it a few times before that). Since then, I’ve learned a lot about the aging arc of Sangiovese and those experiences were just entering the early drinking window for the 2001 Il Marroneto. This is where I really like them. Drink now with patience and plenty of air and through 2036. Bottle No. 6064 — 3 months ago

Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2017

Oh Wow!!! Bright ruby color. Aromas of cedar, smoke, exotic spices, rose petals and bright cherry fruit. Flavors of crushed plums and black cherry fruit, black licorice, tobacco and prunes. Lovely herbal, spice, mineral and floral notes on the long and concentrated finish. Fine grained tannins and full bodied. Perfect balance of power, complexity and finesse. Outstanding and Classic! Felt a little sad when I noticed the bottle was empty. Thanks so much to Kasey and Petey for sharing this one. — 5 months ago

Marchesi de' Frescobaldi

Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2019

Huge producer but all organic. Cranberry, cherry, orange peel, tobacco leaf, carob, perfect smidge of VA to keep things interesting. Ripe, tactile tannins. Touch hot at 14.5%. Drink or hold with or without food. I preferred the balance of this on day 2. — 5 months ago
