Tommasi

Poggio al Tufo Rompicollo Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2021

2021 vintage.
Sangiovese 60 % and Cabernet Sauvignon 40 % from Pitigliano estate in Maremma, Tuscany with a southwest exposure.
Owned by Tommasi family since 1997.
Rompicolla is ‘breakneck’ but means tremendously steep and slippery slope…a risky adventure.
Soils are deep in volcanic tuff.
Stainless steel ferment and matured 1 year in 65 HL Slavonian oak casks.
Red cherries, raspberries, savoury spice, and floral.
Medium bodied but fresh and clean on the finish.
This wine loves food ….and I appreciate that.

Ferrando Vini

Torrazza Erbaluce di Caluso 2020

Rich with equal parts honey and lemon. I love the style of Northern Italy and this could be anything from Piedmont to Alto Adige. Golden glow, sweet perfumes, viscous foundation. Aromas of honey lemon almond marzipan, a bed of flowers, smoke and hint of mint. Very worth my while. — 4 years ago

Domodimonti

Bran Caia Ilatraia Maremma Toscana Red Blend 2013

A good wine. But a bit of a let down, if I’m being honest. 60% cab and I expected more fruit, structure and body. It veered too much into the Sangiovese territory. Not complaining but not celebrating either. — 7 years ago

Massa Vecchia

Maremma Toscana Rosato Rosé Blend 2019

It needs time to open up
After a while it really reminds of a Burgundy
It has class to sell
Less funky than the 2018, but still very fleshy and delicious
It might be that the winemaking hands are changed, but not the beauty of the wine.
Again not a rose for the lovers of a classic Provence crisp rose, more towards being a red i reckon
This wine i am sure can age quite well for few years. It is definitely something you at least wanna try once, but i would not be surprised if you get hooked.
Cheers

Rocca di Frassinello

Le Sughere Maremma Toscana Super Tuscan Blend

It was under 20 dollars and spectator gave it a 93 (which is a joke) so I picked it up. It is lighter very drinkable but doesn’t approach the accolades it received. Another drink again but not buy again. Spectator must have been paid off for that rating. Not the first time I’m sure. — 5 years ago

Tolaini

Valdisanti Tenuta S. Giovanni Toscana Red Blend 2014

2014 vintage, imbibed Aug/2019. Needed decanting ... very closed at first, practically no nose at all. Began to open up after a half hour to 45 minutes. Eventually - good fruit, big body, but tannins well controlled. I had my doubts at first, but ended up really enjoying with a hearty beef dinner. — 7 years ago

Vigne e Vini Varvaglione

Papale Primitivo di Manduria 2019

This is a version of Primitivo quite different to what we are used in Italy.
I am sure it has its lovers
6 months in French oak and 6 in American oak too
The wine has a deep colour
Multitude of spices over a big fruit.
It is a step away from a Barossa wine and two away from a classic Primitvo.
But it is definitely long and mouth fulling.

Vigne e Vini Varvaglione

Papale Linea Oro Primitivo di Manduria 2017

This was an excellent wine. It’s probably only my second outing with Primitivo di Manduria. It pours a beautiful thick purple in the glass. It has a decent nose. But the flavors are quite wonderful and powerful. There’s raisins berries plums and maybe a hint of vanilla or tobacco. There’s some acidity. And a decent finish. I will absolutely be buying this again, as well as other Primitivo PDM wines. It went perfectly with the elk steaks we paired it with. — 4 years ago

9.1

Natural montepulciano. Comes in a clear bottle 🤷🏼‍♂️. Fully enjoyable, especially with rustic Italian fare. Quite farty on the nose. Tad spritzy. Slightly under ripe cherry on the palate with a minty kick. Tobacco and herbs. This has really nice verve and presence and I love the texture - lactic, almost creamy. Finishes with grainy tannins. Very alive. Tastes like a barrel sample. Drained quickly. — 6 years ago
