Carlisle is one of several winemakers who make wine from this heritage vineyard. Zin yes but in classic field blends from the late 1800’s, this one also includes some Alicante Bouchet, Caignane and Petite Sirah. The results are magnificent. Decanted two hours before dinner and it still opened up over the next couple of hours. My hats are off to Carlisle for making such wonderful wine with such precious resources. A proper Father’s Day celebration! Wow! — 8 years ago
Interesting Zinfandel (73%) based California blend. Also includes Petite Sirah (13%), Carignan (10%), Mataro (3%) and Alicante Bouchet (1%)). Dark ruby/purple color with a slight garnet rim. Pronounced aromas of ripe red and black berries, mint, violets moist earth and wet stones. Plush flavors of black berry/raspberry/plum fruit, mulberries, cola, dried herbs and sweet baking spices. Touch of smoky black pepper spice on the long and zesty finish. Medium-plus bodied and robust with a juicy profile and soft/silky tannins. Excellent picnic wine! Memorial Day 2026. — a month ago
Alicante Bouchet and Touriga National. Dark, dark colors. Blackberry and blue berries in the nose. Blackberry pie flavors and an exceptional finish. Yum! — a year ago
Twenty one year old red Rhône blend from Monterey County, 56% Syrah, 32% Grenache, 7% Carignane, 3% Petite Syrah, and 2% Alicante Bouchet. Pale ruby. Red currant, plum, black cherry, pepper, game and dusty tobacco on the nose. The palate starts out weaker and less complex than the nose but calibrates after a couple of hours. It is dry, with medium acidity, dialed down alcohol, medium tannins, medium body, pronounced flavours of red fruits, plum and spice, some dark chocolate, a peculiar short earthy gamy finish. I would love to try this with Texas Style Brisket. — 3 years ago

Another excellent vintage. Teinturier Alicante Bouchet Grape. Deep ruby color. Big aromas and flavors of red/black berry/cherry fruit. Hints of violets and brambly forrest Floor. Oak is well integrated. Nice powerful structure but the tannins are quite silky. Consistently great-Vintage after vintage. — 5 years ago

Dense and rustic Portuguese Field blend of Alicante Bouchet, Touriga National, Tempranillo, Syrah and Petite Verdot. Dark purple/black color with slight lightening along the rim. Aromas of ripe black fruit, roasted herbs, leather and dried earth. Flavors of black plum, blackberries, minerals and espresso. Long finish and (even with eleven-plus) years of aging) very noticeable tannins. Rich, plush and concentrated. Savory and very complex. This one needed the bottle age. — a year ago
This was a big, rich, generous bottle of wine. Each sip was a mouth-filling cocktail of macerated red and black fruits with hints of vanilla and spice. Very supple! 39% Carignan, 26% Mataro, 17% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah, 5% Alicante Bouchet, 2% Black Malvoisie. 5/18/22. — 5 years ago
Drinking great. The dollops Carignan, Alicante Bouchet, and Petite Syrah really work well here, adding color, flesh, and extra dimension from a tannin and length perspective. The wine is wholesome, inviting with its lush black and marionberry pie aromas, there’s an ample dose of smoke and licorice there too. Its very alluring but the palate really shows the balance, yes deeply fruited with a sort of toasty pie crust element, but the focused acidity and tannic grip really hone it all in. It departs spiced and mineral if you will. — 7 years ago
2015. Wow! What a great, classic and rustic wine. This is made with a blend of 60% red grapes including some of my favorites from Galicia - Granacha Tintorera (aka Alicante Bouchet), Mencia and Trousseau (they call it Portuguesa, but also known as Merenzao and Bastardo) - plus 40% white grapes including Palomino, Godello, and others. Made in stone lagares and amphora (Roman empire style clay pots). No note of wood, although some of their wines are later aged in large old oak bote. Great minerality, freshness of fruit, and both floral notes on the nose from the white varietals and tannins on the palate from the red varietals. Served lightly chilled but could benefit from a little more. — 8 years ago
Awesome stuff. 100% Alicante Bouchet. — 8 years ago

Tuscan blend of Merlot (90%) and Alicante Bouchet (10%). Dark ruby color with purple highlights. Aromas of black fruit, exotic spices, tobacco, violets and wet gravel. Flavors of ripe black cherries and plums, cocoa powder, blueberries, black licorice and those exotic spices. Medium-plus finish and body with bright acidity. Slightly chewy but fine grained tannins. Plush and rich. Interesting. — 24 days ago
