The Arsonist California Petit Verdot Blend 2021

Very hipster tattoo styled label. 52% Petite Verdot, 25% Cab Sauv, 23% Malbec. Dark, dark maroon color. Aroma is gravel and molasses. Maybe a hint of berry. Flavors are beefy and big. Lots of dried black cherry. Some molasses. Tannins are well represented. Has that classic Matchbook herbal streak. This went well with the lamb and mushroom dish I made. A great blend. Lots of zip and zing. Delicious. — 5 months ago

Rio Sordo Barbaresco 2009

Rust showing on the rim... Crunchy red berry with hints of VA. Evergreen pine scent and a sultry black cherry round. Chi tea spice and ginger round out the nose. Fresh palate with juicy cherry transitions into mocha flavors. Finishes dry and with a delicious factor. With air this becomes more oxidative. Drink now. — 8 years ago

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2011

Tasted at Chateau.
52 CF 47 M 1 CS, 100% new oak for 15 m's.

Dark, inky crimson, opaque, compact rim.

Classic Cheval Blanc bouquet. Seductively floral - rose petal, lavender, violet. Elegant red fruit profile with fresh mintiness in abundance.

While evidently young and thus structured, this wine is extremely nuanced and soft (in a good way). Sophisticated and complex black and red fruits highlighted by fresh herbal undertone (mint, sweet basil, and thyme). Incredible finish - long and uniquely memorable.

No doubt, it will be spectacular in 10-15 years and beyond. My first young Cheval is exactly everything I was hoping for and more. 94++

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Pretty deep ruby , thin ruby rim . This is quite closed at first , but very focused mineral and grafite , oyster shell notes with dark blackcurrant and blackberry notes , spicy touches too . On the palate this is really focused and reserved , lots of mineral tinged black fruits , tobacco , oyster shell . Quite rich yet very good balance, fresh acidity . Ripe but gritty tannins , saline and really long finish . Accessible now , but really destined for the long term. Wait another 5-10 years , will drink well a further 20 . Always very tasty, drinking great right now, and could lay down for 2 years (Grenache needs a little relax time).

Great house wine, and introduction to BBV Rhone offerings.

Justification Paso Robles Cabernet Franc-Merlot 2015

Today I wanted to try a Paso Robles wine and I have heard a bit about the Justin wines. I thought I would stop by my local store in Chicago and pick-up the 2015 Justin Justification, a Right Bank blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot from Paso Robles.

Upon opening I immediately am getting dark fruit, black currant, black cherry, raspberry, tar, licorice, violet, like smoke and crushed gravel.

On the palate there is juicy black fruit, black cherry, black raspberry, black currant, green bell pepper, spice, cedar, graphite, toasty oak and a bit of dark soil.

This wine is medium to full bodied with a smooth supple mouth feel. There is medium + acidity and medium smooth tannin that leads right to a medium to long finish. An enjoyable wine that would go good with some hardy food. Have a great rest of your week and be safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Tablas Creek Vineyard

Dianthus Paso Robles Mourvedre Blend Rosé 2019

The 2019 ‘Dianthus’ Rose is a scintillating new effort that is truly one of the top Rose wines you will find in California. A blend of Mourvedre (52%). Grenache (33%) and Counoise (13%), the ‘Dianthus’ shows off its vibrant pink hue, delivering rich red rose petals and guava tones that collide with suggestions of damp earth and orange blossom aromatics that all take shape in the glass. The palate is marvelously textured with a silky mouthfeel. Layers of red fruits dance with citrus rind, rose water and shades of damp stone on this highly complex palate. The combination of richness, viscosity, tension and length is truly marvelous in this thrilling new Rose. Marvelous to enjoy in its youth, the 2019 ‘Dianthus’ Rose will enjoy a long life ahead of it, picking up early tones as it ages. Drink 2020-2028- 93 — 6 years ago

Château Pédesclaux

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

52 CS 42 M 6 CF

Inky purple with brilliant tint. Youthful and compact rim.

Quite a contrast from the softer 2014, this shows a Cabernet-based character with dark cherry, blackcurrant, boysenberry, and leafy freshness on the bouquet.

The palate is certainly more interesting, a step up from the 2014. Red cherry, raspberry, red currant lifted by slightly minty freshness and baking spices while smoky hazelnut keeps it interesting.

Very commendable effort but I really wish they dialed down on Merlot in the final blend. 89+
