Le Mazel Crozes-Hermitage AOC Syrah 2016

Lyle Fass
9.4

Exactly in the zone. Gorgeous nose of lavender, wild mint, Herbes de Provence, grilled meat, bacon, blood, granite and blackberry fruit. This has become fully mature but not old, with that perfect mid-term aging window where the fruit is still alive and the savory Rhône complexity has arrived. Palate is juicy, sappy and energetic, with dark fruit, meat, smoke, granite and real structure. Tannins gained a little grip with air, but the fruit kept winning. Beautifully Crozes, but if blinded, many would guess elite Saint-Joseph. Drinking at apogee, and honestly could still go longer. 9.4, flirting hard with 9.5.

Day two. Nose is mintier, wilder, more sauvage. Still juicy, clean, drinkable, and delicious, with a long finish and real fruit remaining, but it has lost a little clarity and precision from day one. Not collapsed at all, just slightly less vivid. Still absolutely something I’d drink happily.

Ernest Brut Nature Saint-Péray Marsanne Roussanne

Lyle Fass
9.3

Beautiful nose if bitter almond, key lime pie, sea air, and that strange Marsanne/Roussanne Saint-Péray minerality, nervy and aromatic, almost underarm if underarm smelled good. Palate is juicy, clean, graceful, with fine mousse, kumquat, bitter almond, and an ESB-like bitterness that makes it serious rather than easy. Not mass-market bubbles, but extremely impressive. — 15 days ago

Château Gros Moulin

Per Vitem Ad Vitam Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

2015 vintage. Gros Moulin has a long winemaking history, Rémy Eymas being the 11th generation. Per Vitem ad Vitam is a Cabernet Franc (80%) and Malbec blend and this 2015 is gorgeous. Intense perfume with blackberries, violets, cedar wood and a hint of rosemary. This complex beauty combines power and elegance. The solid tannic backbone is balanced by fresh acidity and layered black fruit. Great length too. Hard to resist now, but should age effortlessly for at least 15 years. Terrific value at 25 euros. Not to be missed. — 4 years ago

Les Eygas Cornas Syrah 2022

Lyle Fass
9.4

Such a terrific value. Meaty nose with blackberry and dark red berries. Mint, herbs and flowers. Needs air for the granite to show. Palate is delicate and juicy with terrific complexity and freshness. So pure and wispy for a Cornas. Still dense but so juicy. Incredibly well made. — 4 months ago
