Amazing white pepper unlike any Syrah I've ever had from California, with roasted beef and blackberry and raspberry, both the fruit and bruised green canes. It is a little lean and tart on the palate, which I find very appealing but which may be offputting to some. It's startling reminiscent of old school Cote Rotie in the elegant style, like 80s and early 90s Ogier, Jasmin, or Gallet, and reminds me how much I miss them. It also reminds me of Texier's Serine wines. — 11 years ago

This bottle was opened sometime earlier in the evening before a glass was handed to me. Pacalet’s 2018 Cornas pours, a deep ruby purple with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with wild notes of ripe and tart black and red fruits: mixed brambles, freshly cracked black pepper, bacon fat, lavender, dried green herbs and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. Considering Philippe is Burgundian, I think he does a great job with Cornas; certainly showing a sense of place with the feral nature of Serine. Drink now through 2038. — a year ago

Less than 350 cases, Guigal hermitage old clone of Syrah aka Serine with some Viognier. Lieu-dit La Viallière meaning special soils of decomposed schist and gneiss. No chemicals, natural yeasts, and Demi-muids/ new wood barrels. Ruby garnet color with aromas of bacon, cherry, rose petals while silky on the palette with some herbal notes on the finish.
