South Island Pinot Noir

Mount Edward

Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021

This is extraordinary for a base pinot. Asparagus, prosciutto, and vegetal notes dominates the nose. The palate unfurls into a savoury tapestry of tannin, dark cherry and salami. This is long and complex and would improve with cellaring given the balance and tannic grip. Punching well above its weight. — 5 months ago

Peter Max Western Cape Pinot Noir 2022

Sensational. Bright fruit on the front and then delicate, yet complementary to food, lingering smooth finish. Strawberry, cherry, and a hint of freshly chopped herbs. — 5 months ago

Haters gonna hate, but this is good! Light body, fruit, chocolate and smoothness. Very little acid. Delicious! — 7 months ago

Felton Road

Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2016

Quite light garnet wide terracotta , garnet rim. Quite a lot of dry spice , nutmeg , star anis , red cherry, raspberry , red currant , earthy hints . After a while a bit more leafy , smoky on the nose. On the palate this is quite light and direct in style , raspberry , red cherry and those earthy , granite touches . This has fresh acidity and fine , light tannins . Reasonable earthy , spiced finish . Certainly ready and on this showing will probably last ok another 5 or so years. Not the most complex , overall I found it a little pedestrian, but still showing ok , but no need to wait any longer , I don’t see this improving . — 8 months ago

Pinot Noir from the Central Otago region of New Zealand is definitely worth seeking out! Burgundy in style. Mushrooms, Forrest floor, graphite, ripe berries, and bubblegum. — a year ago

Mature Vine Lake Wanaka Pinot Noir 2010

This was rich and delicious. It was fair enough for Suckling to pose the question “Is this the best NZ Pinot so far”? Ticks all the requisite boxes - ripe red and black fruits, a creamy texture, a nice garrigue herbal note. This Pinot lives up to the gorgeous site - one of the most awesome views you will see from the top of the vineyard over Lake Wanaka. Most impressive. — 5 months ago

Jo is a great host with one of the best winery views in the world. Wines don’t suck either.

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2022

For hot climates, like here on the Outer Banks, I love chilled Pinot Noir for all day drinking. This Marlborough Pinot has the right acidity to stand up to the spices and heat of the NC summer. — 10 months ago

Cloudy Bay

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2021

Light ruby color with a garnet rim. Bright aromas of red berries, violets, rose petals, geraniums and forest floor. Ripe red cherry, strawberry, cranberry and boysenberry fruit flavors with additional notes of mushrooms, Earl Grey tea, sweet spices and dark chocolate. Pleasant hint of toasted oak on the long and linear finish. Well balanced with very fine tannins. Medium-plus body and nice density. Quite good. — a year ago
