John Sebastiano Vineyard Pinot Noir

Have had this 2029 a few times over past 5 years . Still young but beguiling complexity. Spices like juniper berry rosemary clove nutmeg . Cranberry and cherry fruit with a stemmy forest aspect. In a dinner wine night of Pinot from around the world this was the standout — 2 hours ago

9.6

Medium gold color. Wine is still young. Super silky texture. Nose of camomile, butter, and minerals. High quality, refined wine. Give this a few years and it will give any top White Burg a run for its money! — a month ago

Etude

Fiddlestix Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019

I always love wines from the Fiddlestix Vineyard. This seems like the softest and most accessible version I’ve ever had. Nose shows loads of moist humus and loam, a milk chocolate (surprising!), a slowly wilting green herbal thing, crushed rock, and dark cherry. Rich and very soft in the mouth, the acids are a little on the low side. It gives a lot of flavor, but lacks the complexity and tension I’d like to see. (Later update: I now see the alcohol listed on the back label is 14.8! . . . for a PN from SRH! Yikes! That explains a lot.) — 2 months ago

Melville

Estate Sta. Rita Hills Syrah 2018

Opaque ruby color with a thin garnet rim. Aromas of forest floor, bacon fat, fresh rosemary and mint, wet soil and black fruit. Flavors of black olive tapenade, tobacco, smoked meat, red, blue and black berries and roasted herbs. Hint of black pepper and salt on the long (and pleasantly sour) finish. Soft tannins and very bright acidity. Medium bodied and incredibly tertiary and savory. Nicely aged and concentrated. Very interesting and unique expression of the varietal. — 2 months ago
