Weingut Tesch

Krone Riesling 2016

So much flavor wrapped up in a bright, almost too easy to drink package. No mistaking this for anything but Riesling with an exuberant nose of tangerine, petrol, and pool toys. Great body with supple fruit and mouth watering acidity. Delicious now but sure to cellar well for at least a decade.

More info: the Tesch single plot wines are always spatlese trocken (usually around 12.5%), with around 4 g/l of RS and 7.8 g/l acidity, with no oak.

Krone vineyard: south east facing slopes, dry site with soils ranging from loess limestone to weathered sandstone.

Corazon Profundo

Garnacha 2018

I like the weathered hands photo on the label. Looks muy autentico. Dark color. Lighter than the others from #CorazonProfundo, but still pretty dark. Smells fruity. Ripe black olives and berry jams. Flavors are good. Tart. Smooth. Bit of bitterness. Licorice and flowers. It’s a nice Spanish wine. A bit simpler and less extracted than some other Granacha I’ve loved. Still this makes for a great bottle to go with pasta or bar b que (and the $7 price at Grocery Outlet is perfecto!). — 6 years ago

Guinness Ltd.

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout

So very class! Black as space, with a nebula of chestnut. Rides high, but dismounts to palomino stars and bubble islands. Swirl it and it stacks right back up! Witchy runes and dismembered arms clutching axes narrate the lacing. Pecan and hazelnut, charred caramel, bitter chocolate and black bread with burnt caraway and salted licorice! That’s just the nose. Medium mouthfeel drops pure dark chocolate to coat the tongue, blackened brittle, a treacle touch that hardens like toffee over rye. Fine coffee, black, but home from the pub smelling of vanilla, a bitter bout with chit and chicory, but nutty like baked walnut atop a brownie. Delicious stuff! Glad I revisited! Just the balm to soothe a weathered soul in a time of crisis. Cheers!

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt

Josephshöfer Feinherb Kabinett Riesling 2017

A reliably excellent off dry bottling from this small vineyard site - a five hectare monopole controlled by Kesselstatt. Great weight on the palate with the perfect bit of RS to pair with a spicy curry.

More info: 23 g/l RS, 7.2 g/l acidity. South-south-west exposure, grey weathered Devonian slate.

Matthiasson

Tendu California Vermentino Blend 2015

Matthiasson produces both a red and white Tendu. The 2015 white Tendu is Vermentino based with some French Colombard and a small percentage of a mix of Italian white varietals. The Vermentino is from weathered, pink gravelly alluvium in the Dunnigan Hills AVA. Fermented in neutral barrels, inoculated with yeast from Champagne, no ML, no batonnage and sterile filtered.

Pear, lemon, white flowers, and loaded with minerality and acid. With its low alcohol (11.7% abv), ultra-refreshing, super-crushable style, the 1 liter bottling is a good move.

Precedent

Wirz Vineyard Riesling 2019

Planted in 1964, on deep granitic sand, and some on the darker clay loam that’s weathered from limestone. Dry farmed!!!!, head trained, and organic. Riesling roots can go down up to 60 feet. So these vines get their 💦. Dry, 13.5%. Aged in foudre for 10 months. A heirloom. Almost no diesel aka kerosene. Plenty of acid. Jasmine. Not my cup of tea but interesting. — a year ago

Fattoria Valacchi

Riserva Gelso Chianti Sangiovese Blend 2013

An 8 year old Chianti that had fully transitioned to secondary and tertiary notes of earth, cigar box and old weathered leather. Not a single fruit note. Fun and easy to drink as we were exploring the trails we had freshly cut into the mountain side and with our last home grown to tomatoes on the bruschetta’s. — 5 years ago

Libertario

La Mancha Tempranillo 2016

Deep dark berries, strong cigar shop, weathered leather on the nose. Light bodied red with cranberry, orange, tight notes of leather and green tea, hints of cigar spice on a juicy medium-length finish. Nicely done, probably would go well with seafood and pasta. — 6 years ago

Great nose, but definitely needs time, this will be great on Friday!

Winery notes

Syrah
The 2016 Judge Family Vineyard Syrah is sourced from the cold climate of the Bennett Valley of Sonoma. Meticulously farmed by Joe and Gail Judge, this rocky sloping vineyard planted on a mix of volcanic tufa, weathered stones, and clay, produces elegant and intensely aromatic Syrahs reminiscent of the great wines of Northern Rhone. Bennett Valley is a gently sloping elevated valley nestled between three mountain peaks in Sonoma County. Within the Sonoma Valley appellation

Sonoma Mountain and the Sonoma Coast, the well-drained mountain benchland soils combine with early morning fog and cool marine breezes to create ideal conditions for growing exceptional cool-climate varietals. The wine was cave aged in a combination of 78% used and 22% new French oak barrels for 20 months and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Sine Qua Non

Ode to E Assortment Syrah Grenache Blend 2004

2004 Sine Qua Non "Ode to E" Central Coast Grenache.
Gearing up for a major snowstorm here in Chicago. A great reason to pull the cork on greatness. On one of the best Grenache wines I’ve ever tasted. Heck, maybe THE best. If not first in it’s class, it definitely doesn’t take long to call the roll. Certainly one of my favorite wines, period. I love everything about it including the label: “A Love Forever In Bloom, Face With Tracks Of Life’s Attacks, Tattooed Scars Of History, Weathered Crust, Full Of Lust For That Rose Of Love For E.” The wine? The nose is a dreamy aromatic symphony of roses and raspberry compote. Also incense, pepper, graphite and a touch of smokey something off in the background somewhere. Beautiful. The palate is blast of sweet dark berry liqueur with that pepper and Asian spice creeping in on the backside. So lush. So complex. The finish? Intense, rather spicy and never ending. Never ending! As with all things Krankl, mind boggling balance between depth, complexity, raw power and utter weightless elegance. Simply put: Perfect. However you choose to define it. I think my favorite definition of perfection is from Coach Gary Gaines: “Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didnt let them down because you told them the truth. And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasnt one more thing you could've done.” Well Manfred can certainly look us all in the eye on this one!

It is a blend of 88% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 2% Viognier and we loved it. Brought it to Kauai and were in heaven opening this after our couples massage at Hanalei Day Spa Lomi Lomi on the beach in a grass hut. Enjoyed at Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant nearby. On the label he’s holding a yellow flower. Ode to E Syrah holds a red flower. To quote the Good Rats, “Yellow flower-I love you!”

La Rioja Alta

Viña Alberdi Reserva Rioja Tempranillo 1996

No one chooses to have these kinds of bottles, the bottles themselves choose you. From the first whiff, you can smell the age; dried cherries, weathered leather, a trace of cigar box, and a hint of vanilla that lingers like memories of wilder days. On the palate, the wine unfolds slowly, each layer revealing the finesse of a life lived with grit and grace. The tannins, softened with age yet carrying a hint of defiance. — a year ago

Post House Road

Proprietary Reserve Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Lot to ingest on that label. Smells of weathered wood in the sun and sweat? Or maybe hot sandstone in the rain? Streak of smashed berries and cherries too. Flavor is pure Cab. Leather, wood, brooding fruit, tomato leaves, and cassis. This is lovely stuff. Makes the grade and then some. — 5 years ago

Dogfish Head Brewery

American Beauty Hazy Ripple IPA

Puffy clouds float atop alpenglow orange opacity, lacing the barriers with the remains of heraldic coats of arms weathered nearly indistinguishable by time, like the thin anonymous gravestones in ancient churchyards. Orange and tangerine, clementine and thyme, ruby grapefruit, and candied lemon, Froot Loops, green grapes, dragon fruit and kiwi scented. Lovely lime and lemongrass, quince, cardamom pod, chamomile, white pepper dusted pineapple, pomelo, and steely minerality that fractures into micro clove and aniseed while immersed in lemon oils and orange. Really nice offering. Keeps you guessing and offers some interesting taste combos.

Bodegas La Horra

Corimbo I Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2010

Tasted blind (suspected aged Cornas) - Dark purple core fading to weathered ruby. Smoked beef, barnyard, and animal sweat over dried plum and blackberry fruits. Palate echos a sense of meatiness with dark forest berries. Dry to finish with length and depth. — 7 years ago

Cortijo Los Aguilares

Pago El Espino Málaga Red Blend 2016

The wines from Ronda tend to be quite earthy due to the heavily weathered limestone presence in the soil. This wine incorporates this deep minerality nicely with black fruit aromas and flavors, and a spiciness that brings it all together. Acid is medium plus, tannins are smooth yet grippy meaning this will age, although with a nice decant it is drinkable now. — 8 years ago
