From 375. Solid. A lot of sediment. Tart red fruits, firm tannins. 15 yo and has years to go. A rather burly Pinot. — a year ago
Another Grand Cru from my favorite Alsacian producer.
Poura yellow, I get canary melon, botrytis honey comb, passion fruit, lychee.
Just slightly off dry, the acids have a mustard like quality. (the area is surrounded by mustard fields and I swear that I can smell and/or taste mustard greens/flowers in many wines of Berckem). Follows up with roasted apple flavors, and an incredible clean but long finish.
I wish I could open a bottle of this every night. — 2 years ago
There are a few producers in the world about which I can say unequivocally that I adore every wine they make. Domaine Marcel Deiss is one of them. @domainemarceldeiss. I managed to get ahold of some older vintage wines recently and I’m trying very hard not to drink them too fast, but they’re just so darn good. Decided to open this one over dinner with friends last night and it was glorious. Crystallized honey, parchment, dried orange peels, and herbs, all welded to a core of crushed stone. Fantastic. This is a most unusual (though not for Deiss) field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Beurot, Muscat, and Pinot Noir. — 4 years ago
On my second trip to Alsace, we stumbled upon this winery by accident. A cancellation by Barmes Buecher gave us the opportunity to take a cold and sleepy drive up through Bergheim and in to Rorschwihr where we were welcomed by quite the views and wines. One of the bottles I brought home.
Known for producing wines that are at peak (almost late) maturity, all wines have plenty of fruit and off-dry profiles (ideally picking right before botrytis sets in), and all wines are released when deemed ready (as this 2015 was, as well as a 2003 Pinot Blanc).
It’s not common to see 100% auxerrois as it’s normally blended with Pinot Blanc, as adds a touch more body and honey. Mission achieved here. Deep golden color. Lovely aromatics of spiced pears and honeyed tropical fruits. Maturity and sweetness are balanced on the palate with so much fresh honey yet not cloying or stepping in to dessert wine territory. Not a lesson is complexity, but certainly a lesson in how some of these grape that are normally consumed early can age properly.
Followed over three days and experienced a consistent profile. The residual sugar will certainly help carry this a while. No rush. — 2 months ago
Domaine Sylvie Spielmann, les Vendanges de l'Amour. Qualitative Pinot noir from Alsace. Nose with hints of cherry (unusual) and wood. Dry tannins (usual for an Alsace pinot noir). Very good work. — 2 years ago
Field blend of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Beurot, Muscat and Pinot Noir from the Engelgarten, a vineyard with poor, gravelly soils located just outside the walls of Bergheim (about 10 miles north of Colmar, in the Haut Rhin). Pure, expressive nose with notes of citrus, rubber and minerals. Intense, dry, textured. Slightly ripe. Long, saline finish. — 4 years ago
Loads of petrol, liquid mineral, and apple skin fruit on the nose. Still quite fresh (fresher than a bottle I had several years ago, as I recall). Rich, with tons of dry extract, in the mouth. Deeply mineral, dense, slightly bitter-edged apple fruit. Almost overwhelming. But in a good way. Great wine. — 10 months ago

One of the two 'Village' hierarchy wines (Berckem is the other) offered by Marcel Deiss.
This is mainly Pinot Gris but with blend of other characters (the way it was originally done in Alsace). Yellow/gold hue. Immediately out of the bottle I get the distinct sur lees smell. Give these some time in the glass and you'll be rewarded with unfamiliar olfactory territory- there is no one distinct scent but instead a bouquet spring wild blossoms and a melange of musk and spice, freshly cut apples and I always get a hint of mustard seed from Bergheim wines.
On the palette sharp acid is smoothed over by a slightly plush texture. Imagine a bite of unripened yellow apples in a pie filling before it hits the oven.
Not bad for their entry level wines! — 3 years ago
