Cayuse Vineyards

God Only Knows Armada Vineyard Grenache 2022

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of dinner. The 2022 pours a bright ruby color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with fresh, pretty notes of red fruits: raspberries, Bing cherry, red flowers, white pepper, rocky earth and some gentle cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and juicy. Drink now through 2042. — 6 days ago

Full-bodied Cabernet with fine tannins providing structure. There is a herbaceous note on the palate and some minty spice as well. Definite notes reminiscent of a cooler weather Cabernet style… — 5 months ago

I thought this Northern Rhone syrah was fantastic. It had some barnyard funk up front, like Cayuse, but unlike Cayuse the red fruit was brighter and the tannins were finer. Great value for $65, would drink again. — 2 years ago

8 Red Blend 2018

Very much ‘No Girls’ in that this tells exactly you what it is and how it’s feeling. Feed it simple comforts and it’ll love you forever. Interesting and earnest, if uncomplicated.

Very approachable young while showing the Cayuse funk kiss. This is going to enter my rotation of burger wines.

Mayer

Dr. Mayer Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023

Shay A
9.4

I’ve been on the lookout for Mayer wines here in the US and happened to find a bottle in a retail shop while out of state visiting some family. I’m shocked much makes it to the states with roughly 160 cases of this wine produced.

100% whole cluster; 13.5%ABV

My immediate thought after popping and pouring was that if Cayuse made a Pinot, it would smell like this. So much stemmy/herbal/savory aromatics with peppered rhubarb and red berries. Translucent ruby in the glass (closer to darker-style rosé’s in color). The funk continues on the palate (in a delicious way) with more stemmy and savory spice, cranberries, and black tea. The stems give this nice tannin structure while the acidity here is vibrant…keeps you going back for another sip. I followed over two days and it stayed pretty consistent.

This is 100% up my alley and a wine I’d love to acquire more of. Very curious how these age (because it seems like they would hold wonderfully).

Reynvaan Family Vineyards

In the Rocks Syrah 2013

9.4

Standout bottle from Reynvaan at almost 13yrs. I’ve really enjoyed their syrahs with 10+yrs on them.

95 Syrah/ 5 viognier (co-ferment). Essentially Reynvaan’s version of Cayuse’s Cailloux (both co-fermenting a splash of Viognier).

Lots of experience with these but this bottle just had a little bit “more” of everything. Consumed from bottle over the course of a couple hours before corking and consuming the second half the next day. Immediate “Rocks district” funk aromatically (not quite Cayuse-level funk, but close)…green herbal crunch, olive, dark florals. The mid-palate and finish are the stars…so much complexity in flavor (smoked meat, peppered rhubarb and blackberries, stems) wrapped in a beautifully elegant profile. Oak has faded away and acidity carries it beautifully. Whereas Cayuse wines stay sanguine, savory and herbal all the way through, this has a lifted, perfumed and balanced (fruit and herbs) finish that is eerily reminiscent of Guigal’s La Turque. Best Reynvaan I’ve had.

I really liked this on day one but loved it on day two (score reflecting day two). This is at the pinnacle of its window, so don’t miss it.

I have wanted to do this producer side by side with Alban with well seasoned Tri-tip. Tonight is the night.

The crowd that leans California liked the French better.

I have always thought Alban in the new world mimicked Rostaing’s style.

Both phenomenal and I enjoyed both for slightly different climate & soil reasons.

These two producers do Syrah without the heavy smoked meats & bacon fat of say Cayuse.

Edith Grenache Rosé 2023

Pretty color of peach with a salmon hue.

Soft nose of light raspberries, fresh cherries, light citrus, green apples, spices and minerals.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, strawberries, citrus, peaches, spices, sea salt and cayenne pepper.

Long finish with limes and tart pomegranates.

This is a delicious Rosé from Walla Walla Valley. Rich and creamy. Very spicy and entertaining. Complex and engaging.

Fully dry, but showing this fruitines on the palate, which is very attractive.

This Single Vineyard Rosé is starting to drink beautifully now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

Showing good balance with a great mouthfeel. Feels like a spicy Bandol Rosé. So interesting.

Wine Enthusiasts 93 points.

Good when properly chilled, but shows the complexity when not too cold.

A great sipping wine.

100% Grenache grapes were aged for 10 months in concrete and stainless steel vats. A small production of only 1,788 bottles. Biodynamic.

13.4% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$55.

1.5 hour decant (little cloudy sediment). An incredible medium murky dark garnet color. On the nose: stunning aromas of black currants, some of that Cayuse funk(luv it), smokey roasted meat, herbs, tobacco. Taste: elegant, chewy, energetic, savory medium plus body wine with some blackberry, iodine, orange peel, touch of blueberry, earth, and a bacon fat mineral medium plus finish. YUM!! — 4 years ago
