Right after opening: black fruit, powdery perfume, and rose petals wrapped around me in three-dimensional layers. 1990 really is a great vintage—every great vineyard site and every famous estate lives up to expectations.

One hour later: sandalwood, cream, aged Pu’er tea, and temple incense—the tertiary aromas had fully opened, and I felt as if I’d been carried back in a dream to the White Horse Temple.

On the acidity: vivid yet understated, with a firm yet balanced structure. Drinking such good wine lifts my mood too. — 2 months ago

Tighter than my previous bottle and needed a solid 45–60 minutes to really come alive, but once it did the wine was beautiful: dark cherry, a hint of licorice, florals and tremendous purity. The palate is velvety, sweet, haunting and ethereal, but still carries the amplitude, richness and density of a great 2018, with that distinctive Clos des Chênes sweetness and depth. Brilliant now, but I would still give it another three or four years if I had more bottles. — 2 months ago

2017 vintage. Staff Burgundy tasting. Last tasted 1.24.26 (9.2), 7.7.25 (9.2) and 1.5.25 (9.3). Really unified and consistent with a medium body currently. 10 bottles left but stock option of 3 cases of the selfsame 2017 available. Will be exercising that option. Nice entry with beautiful mousse. Lime zest, green apple, lemon, white grapefruit w/ pith, pineapple flesh, white nectarines, herbaceous, white spice/ginger, graham crackers, saline, sea fossils, limestone marl, volcanics, chalky bits, yellow flowers & white roses, jasmine, gentle, crisp, acidity with balance for days, mid tension/structure with a smartly polished, elegant finish that lasts 90 seconds that long sets on spice and volcanics. — a month ago
