Wendouree Shiraz 1998

Initial aged savoury notes featuring coffee grounds. See if I can continue this note. Wendouree Shiraz produced from ancient vines provides one of Australia’s iconic wines. This however was a little disappointing at 28 years from a big ripe vintage. I must say it still had a full bodied palate with amazing length and persistence with mid palate concentration. Ultra savoury. Despite this I have had better Wendourees. Similar to my sentiments on a previous Delectable note in November 2015. — a month ago

@Bob McDonald Hello mate, sorry to see a disappointing bottle from this producer but as we know this can happen sometimes even too often. I reckon i had the 98 a couplof times and at least once i felt underwhelmed by it. As you know Wendouree has a special spot in my cellar, but sometimes it is irritating and i started to move on from it a while ago.
However i hope you are good.
All the best mate

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2017

Often the Grosset Polish Hill doesn’t live up to its billing as perhaps Australia’s finest dry Riesling but with this 2017 it probably exceeds expectations. It is simply fabulous. Some ripe lusciousness to the mid palate amid lime and lemon notes, but finishes bone dry. My first of 4 bottles so I will enjoy the journey over the next 5+ years if I can keep my hands off it. HH said it is shaping up as one of the greatest Polish Hill Rieslings. — 5 months ago

GRU Adelaide Hills Grüner Veltliner 2019

Served blind by me at Sue Bell’s dinner party with Bruce Redman. After being tricked by Sue all week with blind tastings at the winery I was determined to get square. She was up to the task getting just the state wrong. Once I said Adelaide Hills she knew it was a Gruner. Hahndorf Hill are acknowledged as the best producers of Gruner in Australia. Taking its lead from the GV’s of Austria’s Kamptal region. Grapefruit, Citrus and stone fruit. A multi award winner on the Australian Show circuit. A gold medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards London 2020. — 5 years ago

@Simon Gilligan Quite close to a cellar door visit from where you live. Worth the trip to taste all their GVs. I was a bit disappointed with their Blaufrankisch but I don’t have much experience with this varietal.

Wendouree Clare Valley Shiraz Malbec 2004

Good to be back home with my cellar🥰
The wine took a while to open up, but then it showed all the elegance of the Wendouree Shiraz and the muscular intensity of the allegedly oldest vines of Malbec in the world.
It is always something special to open this producer.
Definitely not a typical Australian wine; extremely good with food. I would say supportive with the meal. Long and reassuring.
@Delectable Wine i am having a big issue, about 1500/1600 wine reviews of mine have gone. I can't visualise them anymore..could you please help?🙏thanks

The Armagh Clare Valley Shiraz 1996

1996 vintage. Decent fill. Open with a Durand and, even so, the cork was an absolute mess. Had to dig out the funnel and screen. Light-medium body. Excellent dark color. Started a bit flat but picked up a little steam after 15 minutes. This example was a little long in the tooth. 2.12.26. — 4 months ago

Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2016

We had the battle of the Shiraz at our family gathering over Christmas. A Shiraz from South Australia and South Africa. Both 2016. This Shiraz, despite from the Adelaide Hills where I think it is a little cooler, was very rich, very bold and broad and a slight jammy note on the edge perhaps. People liked it, but all the votes when for the Shiraz of Cederberg from South Africa. Fun!!! — 6 months ago

Petaluma

Hanlin Hill Riesling 2012

Pale to mid yellow in colour. The wine was a little cold to begin with. Aromas of talc and lime marmalade, dried flowers - a faint paraffin note - No Kerosene or petrol (TDN). A beautiful aged Riesling from the Clare Valley from Petaluma - a long time favourite producer of Riesling. With air and warming up, some yellow peach notes developing. I see HH said this benefits from decanting which I didn’t do. Drinking at its peak. Sadly my last 2012. — 3 years ago

Adelaide Hills Shiraz 2018

A nice mix of black/blue/red fruits, lightly spiced, Medium to full bodied, feels like a bit of whole bunch (?) nicely dry savoury finish, tannic, crisp acidity. 93 as I thoroughly enjoyed sitting at their new cellar door with the afternoon sun filtering through the gums. — 6 years ago

@Bob McDonald it was ok! surprisingly easier than I thought (same went for my partner Niki). I think it took about 2 weeks to really feel the difference, at which point yes, sleep was better, starting the week felt better (we do drink more fri/sat/sun), all in all a good break that also saved us some money :) However … having a nice glass of wine is a real pleasure both in the taste aspect, but also the social/shared experience angle. Also a good reminder of how much drinking is baked into our society (with both good and bad ramifications). Coming out of it, as mainly a red drinker, I’m also seeking out more medium bodied styles vs the bigger reds I have probably leaned to in the past - sort of a taste re-alignment.
