Cooperative Winery Of Nemea

Seméli

Nemea Reserve Agiorgitiko 2018

Medium ruby (see through) color with periwinkle highlights. Dense aromas of a myriad of spices and red and black berry fruit. Ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit on the palate with additional notes of cinnamon and clove. Long and lasting oaky finish. Full bodied and smooth texture. Silky tannins. Nicely balanced, rich and well crafted. Perfectly aged. Thanks for sharing this one with me, Chris B! — a year ago

Grande Cuvée Nemea Agiorgitiko 2017

A lovely wine. A surprising bit of acidity on the finish despite its age. Bold oak notes of cocoa and vanilla. Loads of dried fruit with a light herbal underpinning. A heavy tannin load balanced by its acidity. — 2 years ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2018

Out to dinner with my parents last night and I was trying to find a wine that would make everyone happy. No it was not going to be the greatest pairing, but my objective was family happiness. I had previously opened a 2016 at home that they enjoyed, so I knew this would be a safe bet. The 2018 is drinking surprisingly well for being so young. While this was a nice bottle, it will be better with a few more years. If 2018 is your only option, I suggest a bit of time in the decanter.

Produttori del Barbaresco’s website offers a good bit of historical information on their wines — A cooperative founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares (250 acres) of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. They produce a blend harvested from multiple vineyards, but in great years they will produce 9 single vineyard wines. I still need to try one of those single vineyard wines.

Facts: 2016 Produttori del Barbaresco. 100% Nebbiolo. Bottling date was April 2021. 15% ABV, but despite the number it does not come across that high.

Rule #4 Sometimes wine pairing importance comes second. I have to remind myself that not everyone I share a bottle with is as obsessed about wine as I am (i.e. my parents) — they just want to enjoy our time together with a nice glass of wine.

14h-18h Nemea Agiorgitiko Rosé 2019

Another excellent vintage of this intensely hued Rose’. Typical aromas and flavors of cherries and watermelon. Hint of saline. More body than a traditional Rose’. Outstanding! Revisited in December 2020. This wine is terrific! — 6 years ago

Cantina dei Produttori Carema

Riserva Carema Nebbiolo 2016

From a lesser known “produttori” in Piemonte. Cantina Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema (what a mouthful) is a tiny cooperative in, you guessed it, Carema.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Fairly consistent throughout but I think I preferred the energy on Day 1. The 2016 Riserva pours a pale garnet with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity and no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of pomegranate, slightly bruised strawberry, toe jam (yeah, well…I’m not wrong), alpine herbs, roses some balsamico and rocky earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and saline with a silky texture. Until now, my only experience with the Carema DOC has been with Ferrando’s Etichetta Bianca and Etichetta Nera. While this bottle didn’t have the same drama as those wines from Ferrando, this was a very good example of Carema. Drink now and through 2031.

La Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle

Valée d'Aosta Prié Blanc 2013

Alder Yarrow
9.2

Sticking with the “great wines from grapes you’ve never heard of” theme for a while longer, why not join me for a sip of this alpine gem. Grown in the northerly reaches of Italy’s Valle d’Aosta, just over the border with France and Switzerland, and in some of Europe’s highest altitude vineyards (1200 meters) this wine is made from the Prié Blanc grape. Prié Blanc is the region’s only indigenous white grape, and is rarely found within the Valle d’Aosta, let alone outside of it. Vibrating with mineral intensity, the wine tastes of green apple, lemon cucumber, dried honey, and a hint of herbs. Electric acidity and a sort of peach-pit tanginess linger in the finish. Because the region is mostly tiny growers, Cave Mont Blanc is a cooperative, and a very high-quality one at that. — 5 years ago

Reserve Rapsani 2013

4th bottle of our Greece exploration. Rapsani region, Xinomavro, Krasato, Stavroto blend. A really good effort. A little bit rounder than the Nemea. I guess the grape blend is responsible for that? Very good QPR. — 7 years ago

Cantina Santadi

Terre Brune Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Carignane 2004

Our next bottle during our delicious dinner at Scampi is a 2004 Carignane from Santadi in Sardinia, which is utterly appropriate given we are in a Southern Italian restaurant. Santadi is a cooperative that has many of the best vineyard sites in Sardinia and takes meticulous care to make the best wines from those sites. Produttori del Barbaresco in Piedmont and CVNE in Rioja are two such peers in this regard, such is my understanding, which may be limited.

The Carignane del Sulcis Superiore Terre Brune from 2004 was a wonder with the cuisine. The wine is at once powerful with plums and cherries, and graceful with a lovely silky texture. This is reference point Sardinian quality. I'd like to try more.

Greek Wine Cellars (GWC)

Flowers Nemea Agiorgitiko 2019

Violets, rosemary and basil, cranberry, black plum, tobacco leaf, tart cherry, char, and whiff of leather shop on the nose. Cranberry, plum, fresh tart strawberries, and black tea on the palate. Light easy and juicy mouthfeel but well balanced with good acids and the tannins linger a while. Gets even better the second day. Great for either sipping alone or pairing with a variety of dishes. — 3 years ago

Domaine Louis Michel

Grenouilles Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2005

🏅 Rating 90/100 (4,0⭐)

Yellow gold. Buttery. Shows its age with more tertiary aromas of mushrooms. Oily texture. Bitter citrus zest and long finish. No oak wine making preserves the purity of the wine with aging. It won't develop more and we are lucky to meet it at the stage before it starts declining.

Comes from the smallest Chablis Grand Cru. Domaine's plot is located at the top of the slope. Vines were planted in 1950-80. SW exposure, with plenty of sunshine and gentle breezes, tempered by the Serein river. Fairly gentle slope. Le Chablisienne cooperative owns over 75% of the climat.

Winemaking is with indigenous yeasts, in temperature-controlled vats. Wines never see oak, steel only. Maturation 18mo.

Nemea Agiorgitiko 2010

Coming back to the Greek red wine I had last night... it’s worth a special post. Dark fruit nose, lots of spice (black pepper, cumin, clove, nutmeg) on the nose, soft herbal notes as well. Deep garnet color like an Amarone. On the palate, lots of plum, soft acidity nicely balanced by tannins. Oh the tannins in this wine! The lingering tannin is so powerful, it makes me think of tannins in a Barbaresco. It is also so grippy that I feel like I am biting into the tannins and craving some braised beef. By the way the wine is from 2010 vintage!!! For $22 this is a gem… and @sommselect I think this wine is going to age more than 5 more years. I just had it 24 hours later, and the tannins are still kicking in high gears. — 7 years ago
