Marie Demets

Intransigeance Pinot Noir Chardonnay Brut Nature Champagne 2018

Graciously gifted to Holly and I by Pierre and Mathilde Demets. Popped and enjoyed directly from the bottle, on the streets of Paris, in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary. “Intransigeance” is a fabulous cuvée made from a combination of selected fruit from both “La Forêt” in Gŷe-sur-Seine and “Fins” in Neuville-sur-Seine; 67% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay. No formal notes due to the setting but I can confidently state that the 2018 vintage is utterly delicious. We laughed and reveled as we took pulls under the Eiffel Tower and walked to lunch through the 7th and 6th. We had a blast. Disgorged July 6, 2023. Only 7306 bottles made. We need more Intransigeance, please @Lyle Fass ! — 7 months ago

Château Cantenac Brown

Margaux Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2017

Tried twice. Blend of 67% Cab Sauv and 33% Merlot, bigger Cab% in ‘17. Deep Ruby with aromas of dark fruits, oak and spice. On the palate flavors of fresh blackberry, plum and currants with licorice and cigar box spice adding some cedar and slight floral notes. Fine ripe tannins, long finish ending with layers of fruit, cedar and spice. A joy to drink. Opening now but will last another decade+. Nice! — 5 years ago

Oakville Ranch

Field Blend Zinfandel Blend 2015

67% Zinfandel - 33% Petite Sirah. 100 cases produced. 15.9% alcohol. Great drinking wine, crowd pleaser. Didn’t taste like it was that high of alcohol percentage. Dark berry, cassis, with a very “thick” mouthfeel. If you like the old Prisoner or Venge’s Scout’s Honor then you will love this wine. I would either aerate it or decanter it for at least 30 minutes. Lots of life yet. Great QPR, especially coming from a small higher end Napa producer. — 7 years ago

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 1967

Pure magic! ‘67 is a legendary vintage, lucky to experience a flawless bottle. This was fully resolved and hauntingly aromatic. It’s was energetic and lasted in the glass. Probably another decade of life left for these Normale bottlings — 8 years ago

Château Lascombes

Margaux Merlot Blend 2022

2022 vintage. Medium heavy body with a feminine-styled effort so plenty of smoke, cocoa powder and blueberry. Tannins not even hanging out on the corner and no visible storefront or corresponding street truck. Waay too young but still waay too delish at this point. 67% Cab, 30% Merlot, 3% (combined) CF and PV. 03.12.25. — a year ago

Château Lagrange

Pagus de Lagrange Haut-Médoc Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

2019 vintage. From 13 hectares in the Haut-médoc appellation. In this vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon was extremely concentrated, which explains the unusually high percentage of Merlot (67%). A serious wine, that is drinking well, but should further improve over the next few years. — a year ago

Estate Vineyards Les Pavots Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2005

2008 vintage. From the Knights Valley AVA (Sonoma). A blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Very impressive. Ripe blackberry fruit, spices, and truffles jump out of the glass. Powerful and elegant at the same time with layers of black fruit, great balancing acidity, haute couture tannins, and a very, very long finish. Irresistible now, but this should age well for decades. Bollinger

La Grande Année Brut Rosé Champagne 2012

This superstar 2012 vintage just doesn’t seem to miss. Especially not when paired with the elegance of Bollinger.

A gorgeous rose copper color in the glass. Plenty of fine bubbles that seem to just go on and on. The approachability of these outstanding 12’s is immediate. Wild strawberries and herbs shine on the nose. Red currant, raspberries, and stewed plums. Some exquisite spice notes along with white flowers. Tangerines and watermelons play a part.

The vitality and sheer energy of this is amazing. 67% Pinot Noir from Aÿ and Verzenay. 33% Chardonnay from Oiry and Le Mesnil sur Oger with 5% still red wine from Bollinger’s legendary Côte aux Enfants vineyard. Terrific youthful tension and balance. Zippy acidity with 8 g/l of sugar. Disgorged in August of 2019 and already showing some maturity.

Pure romance on the tongue. Silky smooth and elegant with fresh red berries and more spice on the palate. Saffron and honey with oak complimenting. The Lehmann Jamesse Grand Blanc provided more floral notes, while the Riedel Dom Perignon showed more ripe fruit and minerality. Both wonderful. Yes this will obviously develop over time and become so much more special but you deserve this now. So do I. Enjoy.
