Châteauneuf Du Pape, Southern Rhône

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2021

2021 vintage. Medium/medium-heavy body. Promising nose with fruit, spice and tobacco. Has dropped much of the baby fat of youth and transitioning into the surly teen years. Richness-front palate. Fruit in the mid-palate. Structure, spices and a gorgeous, savory note akin to comparably aged Côte-Rôtie. Hard to push away from now and on the come. The new Coravin CDP rouge at $40 a glass. 5.7.26. — a day ago

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2000

Pegau CdP is always so great, rich Grenache w/dense, ripe redfruits, this 2000 CdP is more fruit forward than the more structured 2001 Vieux Donjon, both wines are outstanding, these 2 wines really well illustrate the 2000 vs. 2001 CdP vintage differences!! — 12 days ago

Domaine de Beaurenard (Paul Coulon et Fils)

Boisrenard Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2021

Dark purple in color with a wide reddish rim.

Black fruits with wood, earth and chocolate notes on the nose.

Full-bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, cooked cherries, spices, light oak, licorice, chocolates, peppercorn, coffee, earth and black tea.

Medium plus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a delicious Grenache based blend from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Rich and concentrated. Showing good structure, but still very young, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

Complex and well balanced, tangy and engaging. The high alcohol is not too noticeable. Needs time to open up properly, so be patient.

Wine Spectator 92 points. Robert Parker 94 points.

A good quality wine that will pair nicely with a big piece of steak.

A blend of mostly Grenache, with all 13 grape varieties allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from 80 year old vines. Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$100.

Cuvée Réservé Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2023

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2023 pours a deep ruby/garnet with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity and moderate staining of the tears. On the nose the wine is developing with heady notes of tart cherry, mixed brambles, spearmint, red and purple flowers, old school permanent marker, licorice, tomato, green herbs, clove and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the body is, ooof…very nice. Another delicious vintage of Cuvée Réservée. Drink now through 2043. — 12 days ago

Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2016

Ming L
9.0

Aromas of kirsch, dried cherry, old wood, leather, and warm spice lead into a broad, supple palate. The fruit is ripe and generous, with earthy undertones and hints of black olive and dried herbs. Structure comes more from fine tannins than visible acidity, giving a smooth, gently weighted flow rather than lift. The finish is savory and persistent, marked by a candied touch.

A nice traditional CdP, but it does not show the fruit purity and freshness that’s one of the hallmark of the great 16’ vintage.

Hommage à Jacques Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2005

Popped and poured; enjoyed alongside Texas BBQ on the plane home. The 2005 “Hommage a Jacques Perrin” pours a deep purple with a ruby rim; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with mostly dark fruits: mixed brambles, black cherry, animale, star anise and black pepper, garrigue and stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This continues to be ever so dense but paired admirably with the BBQ. Drink now through 2055. — 14 days ago

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2001

This is more youthful than the 2004, yet it also shows more merde than that other Chateauneuf, medium-long finish, I marginally prefer the 2004. — a month ago
