The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru certainly has one of the more attractive bouquets with redcurrant and cranberry, a touch of tobacco and marine aromas (cockle sheds I used to play on in the Thames Estuary). The palate is well balanced, with a touch of curry leaf on the entry and more black than red fruit. The 2014 has a firm grip with a noticeable backbone, yet the finish has plenty of freshness. Dense on nose (showing some maturity?). Yellow aromas all through: apple, grapefruit, curry and some grassiness, some lactose. Kind of viscose, powerful on palate with some alcohol burn on finish, but is paired with a high acidity that balances it quite nicely. A bit of nice grapefruit-bitterness in structure. Needs a good food pairing to bring down the alcohol somewhat. — 8 years ago

15-yr. old Finger Lakes Gewurz, still alive and kicking like a mule. Very brassy golden color. Like a trumpet. Nose still showing some Gewurz fruit, but showing a bunch of unique tertiary notes. First bottle of my 2019 WSU Auslesen from Prüm, and only my second ever Auslese from the estate. I think I knew what to expect from this wine, and sure enough it’s really closed down at the moment, with some spellbinding characteristics that need time to knit together. There isn’t a great deal to the nose, but the palate is gorgeous, very tropical, sweet but featherlight, with some pleasing bitter orange flavour that appears after two hours of air. It seems quite low in acidity, a characteristic of the vintage, and slightly incomplete at present but a joy to drink and a great match for Thai curry.
