Niepoort Raul Perez

Raul Pérez

Castro Ventosa Bierzo Mencia 2023

From the master, Raul Perez with fruit sourced from his family estate, the Joven (rabbit label) is predominately Mencia from 40-60 year old vines and aged in INOX.

Splash decanted directly before service; enjoyed over the course of a couple hours. The 2023 pours a deep purple color with an opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of blackberries, Montmorency cherry, horse blanket, purple flowers, licorice, and crushed rock. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium. Charming, rustic stuff. Drink now through 2030.

El Rapolao Bierzo Mencía 2019

I’ve had a few wines from Raul Perez but this is the first to truly blow me away. Incredibly fresh but also quite structured to hold up all the fruit. Wonderful. — 4 years ago

Las Cabañuelas Cebreros Garnacha 2019

Super fresh, crunchy cranberry and pomegranate fruits with a little bit of pomelo and minerals for good measure. The structure is pretty firm. The tannins are medium, bordering medium+ and the acid is amped up; medium++. The finish is satisfying. Lots of energy in this. Raul Perez doesn’t make boring wines, I can tell you that! — 4 years ago

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2008

This was our red wine selection for dinner at Corvino Supper Club and my first experience with the 2008 Tondonia. We let this sit in a decanter for about an hour while we enjoyed the Raul Perez “Atalier”. No formal notes due to the setting but I recall that it starts a little green (not all that unusual for young Tondonia). Red cherries, harissa, zatar, and dill on the nose. So fresh! Red cherries, earth, leather, and ferrous minerals on the palate. Medium+ acid, medium+ tannin. Lovely. — 5 years ago

Valtuille Vino de Villa Bierzo Mencía 2020

13%. Not the most concentrated or complex wine but impeccably balanced. Fruity but not overdone. Plenty of earthiness. A little hit of tannin and smokiness on the back end. Slight astringency. Burgundian is played when talking about Bierzo but you really can’t help the comparison. These guys are making wine the right way. Chug city. Raul Perez’ nephew, apparently. — 10 months ago

Pricum Primeur Prieto Picudo 2019

Raul Perez is a bit of a wine rock star, so I admittedly came to this 17$ entry level new project of his (with the Prieto varietal) with baited breath…& it did not disappoint. It drinks like…surprise.. a baby Morgon, with clean red cherries set in a fairly mineral frame. Quite lush on the nose. Not for acid hounds per se but still so vital & fresh. — 4 years ago

Las Gundiñas Mencía 2017

Tried to Coravin a glass but no luck, this was so reductive that efforts were futile. So I drank a taste of campfire and the day after opened it and tasted for real. The profile is full northern Rhône, maybe with a touch of gamay. Small red berries, bramble, a touch of organic earth, layers of stony complexity and tasty tanning. Extremely elegant showing, very tasty but only after lots of air. UPDATED from 9.4 to 9.2: I. Is tasted it on 4 occasions and the greatness, though there, shows itself only under perfect air and temperature. A bit too finicky — 4 years ago

A deep almost purple color. Aromas of darkish, fruits, spices and ash. Palate of red fruits, spice and stones. Focused, sprightly and powerful. Long finish. Another Perez gem. — 5 years ago

La Vizcaina La Poulosa Bierzo Mencía 2016

Like another reviewer noted—smells like old rioja. Delightfully dry. Leather, slate, star anise (gluhwein spices), vanilla, fantastic mid-palate, shorter lightly tannic finish. Another Perez winner. — 5 years ago

Parcelas del Bierzo Godello

Bright apple and citrus, medium bodied this does not try to be Burgundy like some (very good) Godello can. Great intro Godello from the heir apparent's own label in Bierzo at Raul Perez' family operation. Awesome deal at sun $25. — 4 years ago
