Reflet Saint Joseph Syrah 2010

Opened just prior to dinner and decanted. The 2010 “Reflet” pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with heady notes of dark brambles, spiced cured meat, purple flowers, black pepper, Kalamata olive, dried green herbs, granitic earth, and a kiss of warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. This is squarely in the zone and fantastic stuff. Drink now through 2035+. — 2 months ago

Very cool. I would have expected a 16-year old St. Joe to be tired. Those 2010 Northern Rhones are aging well, though. Wish I had some left!

Pierre Gonon

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2023

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 2023 pours a ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with an explosion of smoked blackberry pie, purple flowers, bacon fat, olive, black pepper, and subtle warm spices. On the palate the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose however, the wine finishes much more elegant than the nose would suggest. The bouquet might lead one to think this is possibly over the top. However, on the palate, it was far more elegant. Another vintage, another stunning Gonon. Drink now through 2043. — 4 months ago

Domaine Bernard Gripa

St. Joseph Syrah 2019

Decided to try one of these guys. Somewhat surprised - more accessible and quite a bit glossier than I was expecting. The 14.5% is well balanced with great acid. Nice deep berry fruit but perhaps doesn’t have as much of those characteristic St. Joseph briny, earthy, olivey, somewhat rustic notes as expected. Nice pairing with shepherd’s pie made from leftovers from Christmas. — 3 months ago

Nose of dark and red fruit, tar, baking spice and some floral notes. Medium acidity plus acidity, long finish, plum, black pepper, well integrated tannins that is present but not in your face, black tea. — 10 months ago

"Les Granits" Saint Joseph Syrah 2012

Love this wine and producer. Maybe a little too far a long for its age but still so enjoyable. Good value, quality wine. Paired with beef wellington — 3 months ago
