Bourgogne Aligoté 2009

The last time I was fortunate to enjoy the 2009 Bourgogne Aligoté was early 2025 so imagine my excitement to try this again. Looking back at my previous notes, not much has changed!

Opened about 30min prior to service. The 2009 pours a straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is still developing and reductive (as is common) with strong notes of struck match, apple, lime, herbs and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and a touch saline. Worked well with toro crudo. This bottle still needs air. Remarkable Aligoté. I’m revising my previous assessment on drinking window; this example seems to have the stuffing to show deep into next decade. Drink now with maybe a short decant, through 2039. Very good - to young. From the Chards of the night this was the best and did beat the 2019 from the same producer. — 2 months ago

Tasted a lot of 2023 burgundies last weekend. Thought I’d try a white with some age.

With aging white burgundy, sometimes it gives you a touch of v/a. This is on nose but not the palate. Believe it is v/a but there is some confusion with the scent of mushrooms. Thought it might be some burgundy cellar funk. But yes, some detectable v/a. Yet, it’s not entirely offensive.

The palate show excellent viscosity. It’s full & round. Golden-green apples, creamy lemons, some lime zest, both stone fruits, not so sweet pineapple syrup & kiwi notes, warm caramel, Brach’s butterscotch candy, gentle but thick honey, their is some unfortunate, faint wet cardboard that comes once it opens up, mushrooms, saline-sea foam, excellent, white spice, oyster fossils, touch of flintiness-gun powder, smooth chalky powder, wet limestone marl, some herbal notes, yellow lilies, white Spring florals set in greens, pleasant, round acidity with perfect balance, mid toned/structured, nicely knitted, elegant, rich finish that lasts 90 seconds and lands on spice, chalk and volcanic minerals on the long set.

Unfortunate about the minimal cardboard. I’d add a point, maybe two w/o it.

Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

2003 vintage. Opened and decanted without issues or concerns. Used a Durand to open and cork was in great shape. Tasted after 30 minutes. The usual light-medium body. Plenty of polish at the 20+ year marker with unanticipated, ruff splash of chunkiness on the finish. Approx 4-5 years away from the absolute, top of the bell curve now but, given the pedigree, could possibly absorb that timescape another 5-spot and I wouldn't argue. Drink now or later. Either or. Ain't gonna disappoint unless you swing exclusively on Napa mountain fruit vines. 7.1.26. — a month ago

You know I have had this young and I have had it aged like. Oddly for me, some of the younger vintages were really good, which is strange for me. Cheers! 🍷
