Langhe Nebbiolo 2022

Medium Ruby color with aromas of berry fruits and spicy floral notes. On the palate flavors of tart cherry, blueberry and red plum with pepper spice, burnt toast and herbs. Fine chalky tannins, medium+ finish ending with fruit, spice, floral and slight earthy character. Has short term aging benefit, but nice now! — 4 months ago

La Rioja Alta

Reserva Viña Ardanza Rioja Tempranillo Garnacha 2015

This will please some garnacha fans, though I can’t say it’s my ideal Reserva blend. 78% Tempranillo and 22% garnancha, which seems like way too much. Has a sweaty sock aroma that blends with some cherry and vanilla flavors. Almost like a tart cherry pie. The cherry flavors continue throughout with some chocolate and a bit of caramel. Round and silky, and seems loosely structured. Just slightly less dimensional than I would want. — 4 years ago

Riserva Rancia Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2006

Wow. Fourteen year-old Chianti that retains the liveliness of youth. Tart plum and sour cherry fruit, but a more sophisticated nose of leather and earth, with subtle floral notes in the background. Sufficient acid and tannic backbone to be an excellent food wine but balanced and quite enjoyable on its own. Enjoyed the 2006 vintage with a heaping plate of freshly baked ciabatta, Taleggio, Gorgonzola, cherries and dates. I am so glad there is a second bottle of this in my wine fridge. — 6 years ago

Rubentis Getariako Txakolina Hondarrabi Beltza Hondarrabi Zuri Rosé Blend

Lime and minerals on the nose. Tart strawberries and slightly effervescent on the palate. Can't really do better on an 80 degree evening, sitting on the lawn of the Wisconsin State Capitol ❤️ — 7 years ago

Getaria Getariako Txakolina Rosé Blend 2017

Perfect for a 90 degree day on vacation in the outer banks. So refreshing! Sun dried strawberries, slightly tart lime zest, and watermelon. Mouth watering sea water salinity and bright acidity makes this amazing! This is probably the best rose I have had this year! — 8 years ago

Enderle & Moll

Baden Spätburgunder Rosé 2021

2021. Courtesy of @Pinotman /// Andreas. Disturbed, lake bottom brown color. Slightly muddy and tart nose. Medium body. Not my cup of tea but there is an immaculate, front palate flavor moment of perfectly aged red Burg/Pinot Noir of, say, 15-18 years. Everything else is held in check during that time. That safe harbor in the storm is my take away. 4.1.26. — 3 months ago

I do not agree Burgundy priced itself essentially out of the market for normal and especially for young people. CA Pinot’s have done the same and are often beyond > 14%. That really just leaves Oregon and German or for that matter Swiss Pinots in a not totally over the top price range. Over there they are essentially 1/2 the price. Here they are heavily tariffed.

This particular wine was a Rose was 20$. I have not seen in the last 15 years an American Rose which can match Enderle & Moll. In fact i rarely see any Rose Pinot made - stateside - why? Because it simply does not make business sense if you can charge 50$ for the reds coming from the same grapes.

I did not mention rose’ exclusively. I did say Pinot’s. I also mentioned more than one area besides the states that are better suited for Pinot Noir. I believe I mentioned at least three areas w/ an etc. on that subject. As to your point on value, if you google Pinot Noir roses, you will find plenty of them under or close enough to $20 stateside. My only other point, was on sweetness. This one is sweeter than I prefer as would many of the others you may find at a $20 price point. I prefer one’s that are dry. Often, from Spain out of Tempranillo. But I am not here to debate or argue wine opinions. I was only leaving an agreeing comment on Scott’s post. Whether his reasons and mine are similar for not necessarily gravitating to this one, it is just a comment. I’d like to think that is still ok here. Cheers!

Achával-Ferrer

Quimera Mendoza Malbec Blend 2003

STORAGE is everything.

Correct storage does not magically enlighten all wines, but it enables you to wait until such time that wines crafted with proper parts and proper technique will offer you a higher level of enjoyment.

Our final bottle of this 2003 vintage, purchased in May 2006 for $31 as Achával-Ferrer was beginning their ascension to greatness, with pricing to match.

Decanted 4H.

Similar notes to prior experiences:

Nose has ripe plum, graphite, dried black cherry, dried tart cherry, old leather, dried black currant, slight eucalyptus, dark chocolate, stewed raisin, mashed blackberry, faint chalkboard dust and dried rose.
Palate has sweet prune, semi-sweet chocolate, dried black cherry, sweet-roasted red pepper, dried boysenberry, briar and dry earth. Fine tannins, rich and round the on the finish.

Stellar show on our finale of the vintage...Looking forward to the 2004's. I previously stated this bottle could likely make a 20th birthday in proper storage, looks like it can only make a ~19th birthday in this cellar.

Alluring is the best word that I can come up with to describe this one. Youthful, fresh, complex and approachable. Red fruit — both sour and tart. The tannins and acidity are well in balance. So glad I have a few more because I see this improving over the next several years. — 6 years ago

Liaison Pinot Noir 2016

An atypical German Spat, less the earth-centric mineral driven profile favoring green stems (partially whole cluster) and crunchy tart fruit. Also damp forest floor with basil, mint, and cedar tones. Notably good. — 7 years ago
