2002 vintage. Opened with a Durand. Cork in pristine shape. Not decanted. Dark color but airy nose and light-medium body. Like just forming or disintegrating fog, really difficult to get a cohesive grip on a slippery palate. Ethereality to a fault. Hints, glimpses, scents, tastes of greatness but never just enough to remain confident in your rating. And, I suppose, that is exactly where the greatness of this wine lies. Banger. 07 Charmes, from 100+ year old vines right across from Chambertin, is a fabulous rendition in this vintage, seductive and complex wafting a dark fruited and gamey bouquet laced with violets and black tea. It’s been a couple years since I last enjoyed the 1996 and based off this experience, it’s continuing to age gracefully.

Double decanted the night before. The wine pours a garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of cassis, kirsch, purple flowers, tobacco, dried herbs, green pepper, old wood and gravelly earthy. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is long and sanguine. So much soul, it could make Marvin Gaye blush.
